Across the hall is the maid’s bedroom. Originally the stairway went down from this bedroom directly down to the kitchen. In Victorian days, the kitchen maid was never allowed into the main section of the house – just to and from the kitchen. The housemaid usually shared the same room. The house only had one small full bathroom upstairs which the family used. The maids used the one in the basement. This room is now a guestroom.
During renovations, this was the corner sleeping room. Decorated in baby pink wallpaper you could shut the door and maybe nobody would notice. It was one of the last rooms to be renovated with matching wallpaper, drapes and bedspread to provide a period look.
The chimney goes down to the kitchen and is supported in the basement by a huge pipe and therefore we believe that there was a wood stove in the kitchen originally that fed into this brick chimney. It would have been located where the refrigerator now stands.
