Last entry: A Midweek Reading
I have often stated here how I seldom go out in the middle of the week. I like to relax or do house work during the week and save my outings for the weekend as something to look forward to.  This week a new friend and coworker invited me to go to a reading and discussion by the new university "writer in residence" Whitney Terral.  He has a new book out and the school was getting behind him by sending a large contentent to hear his reading. The reeading was held at the newly referbished Uptown Theater. It was originally built in the 1920's as a grand movie theater.  It is no longer used for movies but has been referbished to be used as a concert hall.  It is, from the inside an imressive place. The reading itself went very well. His book sounded, from the sections he read, very interesting.  It is set in rural Oklahoma and here in KC.  It deals with a young black man from Oklahoma and a wealthy older white man from here in KC who deals with the young man out of a sense of guild over his behavure in dealing w/ the young man's grandfather who served under him in the second world war.  It deals with issue of interracial interaction in general and the progress or lack there of in intergration here in KC specificly.

Martha and I arrived quit early for the reading witht the intension of getting some dinner beforehand.  We ended up ordering a couple of hor'se dors that were different and quite good.  The evening was completed by walking home from the Uptown Theater which is really in what is now Midtown down to the Plaza where we both live.  For a weeknight outing it was quite successful. Maybe in the future I won't be quite as unwilling to go out during the work week.

I ended up getting his book and reading most of it.  Unfortunately I wasn't able to get though it.  Though I found the subject matter enteresting I was unable to really get into the story. I still think that if you like mystories dealing with race and social standing you should give it a try.
back to a mid week reading
