| Dear Journal, This weekend is nearly over. It was a busy one and when I returned to the office tomorrow I will feel as if I haven't had a weekend off. That is because I haven't. This is the first of two weekends when I will be going out of town to register students. This weekend I went to Omaha Nebraska to help register about 30 students and next weekend I will be going to St. Louis to register about twice as many. I had hoped to have time to stop and see Ellen while I was in St. Louis, but if this weekend is a true example of how it will work out, I will not have any time to stop by and see her. On Saturday morning I got up on time for a change, I have been having problems sleeping and seem to have cleared up part of the problem. I have been waking up coughing almost every night. I don't have a cold or anything but I would wake up with this bad hacking cough that would take a while to go away and would leave me with a sore throat. I would have to get up and get a throat lozenge to feel well enough to go back to sleep, which at that point would take me quite a while. When my alarm finally rang in the morning I would be to tired to want to get up. Because of this I have been having a hard time getting to work on time. I finally realized what the problem was. One of the symptoms of my asthma, that I had forgotten about, was coughing caused by lack of sufficient oxygen. So Friday night I took some asthma medicine before I went to bed and that seemed to clear up the problem. After an auspicious start I ended up piddling around to much and was late getting ready. So I wasn't quite there when Vickie called to say she was downstairs waiting for me. Vickie is my boss, we drove up to Omaha together besides going to register new students she and I are going to look around at our sister university there in Omaha. We went to look at how they run their corresponding department. I was just a little apprehensive about driving up with her. We get a long very well but I didn't know what we would find to talk about for the four plus hour drive there. In hindsight my apprehension was unwarranted, we have always found more than enough to talk about at the office and we were no different on the drive there or the little time we had to talk while in Omaha. The visit went well. We learned a lot about how other universities handle problems similar to what we face and had a good time speaking w/ our counterparts. The registration itself also went well. We finished it off with dinner on the road and a long relaxing drive back to the city. Next week I will be going up as the lone representative of our department. I will be driving up with a couple of the young women from the Admissions department that I don't know very well but whom I can tell will be fun. I am now looking forward to the trip and will let you know how it turns out. |
