| I had started this entry with "This past weekend was a quiet one" but after writing it decided to revise the beginning. This was not a quiet weekend, it was fairly busy. It started with plans to go out to dinner with a large group to celebrate David's birthday with a surprise party on Friday. I got home from work, took a nap, knowing it was going to be a late night. I changed into some nice close and walked over to a nice Italian restaurant on the plaza where the party was to be held. When I got there I asked the matre d' for David's party, he didn't have one listed. I then asked for it under David's bosses name thinking that since she booked it she may have used her name. He didn't have one listed for her either. I always feel a little uncomfortable standing around waiting alone like that but I waited a while anyway hoping someone I knew would show up. People kept walking in looking at me and then checking on their table. Being there was in it self uncomfortable, but I began to realize that there were others waiting and I was getting additional stares. Normally my blackness is not an issue when I am out doing things, that I think is partly because I am with my friends, (most of whom are white) which disarms the people I will be dealing with but when am out and about alone it makes a difference. So I didn't wait as long as I normally would and headed back to the house to make sure I had the right information. When I got there and check the restaurant was the one I had been told. I then called David's boss on here Cel phone and she told me that I had the wrong restaurant down. The one it was at had a very similar name but was in Independence, one of the eastern suburbs. I then called and left a message w/ Charles to see if he had the right information and if he was going to drive out there. I ended up staying home and changing back into jeans. Much later I got a call from Charles. He and a date had also shown up at the same restaurant and waited for almost an hour then decided that he had missed them and decided to have dinner there anyway. I ended up calling David and apologizing for the mishap and wished him a happy birthday. This is just a continuation of an ongoing trend. I also missed Charles birthday party in September. I haven't done well this year. Besides going to David's party on Friday I also had plans to go to the movies with Christie and a friend of hers, Nita, on Saturday. They were interested in seeing the movie "Meet the Parents" but I am not a big Ben Stiller fan. In the end we went to see the movie "Best of Show" which is playing at one of the art houses here in town. We had some time before the movie and decided to go to have Chinese. I must be going to the wrong places, I always seem to go to restaurants that have buffets, but one Chinese place is much like the next. the food is always good but I can't say I notice much difference between restaurants. So after dinner we ended up in Overland Park at the theater to see "Best of Show". I really can't recommend this movie. Even though it was funny it was also quite disturbing to me. The characters were just a little to real. It showed the lives around five people who show dogs at national dog shows. They ranged from a working class couple to the young wife of an old multi-millionaire. In each case the people exhibited the most stereotypical behavior that you would expect from Americans of their class. as I said I was more disturbed than entertained. Christie and Nita both on the other hand thought it was quite funny. It may be that I am just a little to sensitive. Charles and I planned on going out west to the Target in Overland Park ( a western suburb of the city) on Sunday but he David and Jonny ended up going to St. Louis for the weekend. I ended up going alone. I like shopping alone almost as much as I do as a group. Alone you can spend as much time as you like and you only have to stop and look at what you want, you don't have to wait on anyone. I spent a good two hours out there. I get out there so seldom that I had to look at every thing. Then I had the hard decision. What to buy. I got what I had come for but had to decide if I wanted to get any of the myriad of other things I saw and wanted. like my co journalist Brian in Texas, I am a shop aholic. I do not celebrate X-mas every year. As a Jew I alternate between years. No that is not the normal way of doing it. Most Jews only celebrate Hanukkah and do not celebrate X-mas at all. I have always enjoyed X-mas and since all of my friends are either agnostic with a Christian background or Christian I join them in the celebration. This I do on alternate years. This year is the yeay for me to celebrate Honikkah. But since the X-mas tree is my favorite part of X-mas I am going to put what is euphemiarically called a Hanukkah bush ie a X-mas tree w/ out specificly X-mas oreantated orniments on it. So (yes I am finally getting to the point of this rambelling) I was shopping for new ornaments while at there. I do not have many Hanukkah ornaments and I want to get some generic blue, silver and white orniments to take up most of the space on the tree. But I couldn't decide if I should buy them now or wait until a little closer to the holidays. I decided to wait until at least next weekend to try again. I will be spending Thanksgiving here in KC and will spend that weekend putting up my "Bush". |
