| More than a week has passed since my last entry and I have yet to go to buy either a new VCR or a DVD player. It really comes down to the fact that I don't use my VCR all that often. There is only one show that I make a point to see every week and though my TV is on a fair amount if I miss anything other than "The West Wing" I don't give it any thought. When it comes to watching videos, the last three times I rented movies I didn't even watch them, I even went so far as to keep a couple past the due date to see them and still didn't. But in the end what it comes down to is that when you want to see some special or something you don't want to have to depend on a friend to tape it for you, so I will once again try to get out this weekend to at least pick up a new VCR. I have been avoiding buying any new movies to add to my personal collection for some time in anticipation of buying a new DVD player, so I need to get myself organized and make a final decision as to which DVD I want to get and just go get it. To continue from my last entry. I talked about going to the movie "The Contender" with Andy. I must say that I enjoyed it. I must add this caviot, in the back of my mind I kept questioning my motivation for liking the movie. It's sort of hard to explain but in a way is like going to a play. I have been told that I have a very forgiving heart when it comes to actors. Plays that frends find quite bad I find somewhat enjoyable. Part of it is that I compair plays to movies in what seems to be an odd way. Actors in movies work on a role for up to a year and tape and retape any scene as many times as is necessary to get it right, and then distribute the best shots in the final product to millions of people to see. Where stage actors work weeks not months to perfect their craft and then put it on live infront of an acumilated hundreds not millions with the all to real chance that something will go wrong and the actors will have to adlibe and work around the unexpected. These differences say to me that my enjoyment has more meaning to the local actor than it does to the film actor and that the work done by the local actor is more emediate, real and personal. My genteation grew up weined on TV and more apt to see a movie than a play. Therefore I think that our expectations of what a staged production should be is worped by our experiences with TV and Film. I don't know if I explained that very well but the point is going to a premier is in a way a little like that. Those who see a movie primier have more influence on the film makers and actors than the millions who may come after. The crowds reaction at the premier can make or brake the film. Or as has happened in a few movies, convience the producers to change some aspect or other. So about the film it self. It is the story of a woman who has been nominated to fill the vacated post of Vice President of the United States. The story realy centers around a Sinator who is determained to block here apointment. There were several other people from the university in the audieace who when I spoke with the next day were less than impressed with the film. These co workers are quite conservative and noted that the film was extremly biased toward the libral point of view and was heavy handed propiganda. I didn't disagree with them but didn't see what the problem was. Which they found quite exasperating. I recognized that the caractors were cartoonish in that they were either really bad or really good. That the liberal president and nominee were portraid as the good guys and the conservative senator as the bad guy but I saw it more as the story of how power can corrupt and that weither it is the lierals or the conservatives when you have the power to stop the other side from getting what they want politisions often don't stop to ask if it is right or wrong or good for the country but is it good for their careers. So I recognized that this movie was full of not so subtle liberal propeganda but I enjoyed the plot none the less. This is a movie that I would recommend. If you are a staunch conservative don't waste your time, you will not be able to get past the liberal propeganda. If you feel that athe liberal undertones wont bother you see this movie. It is a good politaical triller. |
