While genealogical research still requires letter writing, trips to your local Family History Centre, the library, and the local records offices; much of the leg work has been cut down by modern technological advances. A great deal of the basic information the genealogy hobbyist or professional genealogist requires can be found on the internet. There are numerous subscription sites, government sites, organizational sites, and private sites listing the genealogies of a specific branch of one family; all of which have searchable databases and in many cases record images which can be downloaded. There are even sites dedicated to listing links to other genealogy sites. The first and foremost of these is Cyndi's List. Operated by renowned genealogist Cyndi Howell, this site offers tips and instructional pages as well as an ever growing index to over 200,000 links.
Rather than duplicate Cyndi's List (and there is no need to do this because Cyndi does an excellent job at what she does) we at Genpals have decided to include the links we believe to be the most beneficial to the family history researcher. These are the links we ourselves use on a daily basis We have tried make it simple for you, the site user.

While some of the sites listed on the pages below are instructional; offering mailing addresses, payment schedules and forms for ordering certificates and records, most of the sites offer searchable data bases. Be advised, however, that some of these sites do require payment for partial or full viewing access. |
Ancestry.com - This subscription site, which primarily deals with US and UK research offers census images, military records, passenger lists, free posting boards and much more. Package prices vary. Genealogy.com - This subscription site deals primarily with US genealogy and compliments Ancestry.com well. It also offers free message and posting boards as well as a chat room. Package prices vary. Cyndi's List - This free site offers educational tools, free forms and programs for download as well as an ever growing index of over 200,000 genealogy site links. Family Search.Org - Operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), which boasts the largest genealogical society in the world, this free site offers census indexes, the IGI (International Genealogical Index) of births, Christenings, marriages and deaths and veiwable ged.coms. Google - While this is a free search engine and not a genealogy site, it is an invaluable tool to the researcher.
