William and his family arrived at Ellis Island, New York on 16 May 1871 on the ship R.M.S. City of Baltimore from Liverpool, England. He was listed on the ship passenger list as a mechanic. The family settled in Houtzdale, Clearfield Co., PA and he found work there in the coal mines. William died in the home of his daughter a little more than four years after his wife had died.
