I work with small farmers in central america and we have a group of farmers interested in organic coffee production, but have been unable to find any relevant materials. Does anyone know of any good publications on the production and processing aspects of coffee? I am particularly interested in anything that touches on the technical aspects of shade and/or organic coffee production (organic remedies for nematodes or la broca, recommended species for shade, etc.) I would be interested in publications either in English or Spanish. Muchas Gracias!

Responsible Coffee Campaign List

http://www.egroups.com/group/responsible_coffee/

The purpose of the Responsible Coffee Campaign (http://www2.planeta.com/mader/ecotravel/ag/
coffee/campaign/campaign.html
) is two-fold. One is to alert faculty, students and staff on campuses to the impact they could have on "southern" social and environmental conditions by asking their institutions to provide alternative coffees. The other is to supply information and sources for getting more to those who are confused about the claims being made on behalf of this or that coffee. Such information also may serve teachers who wish to use coffee as a case study of international trade in an era of globalization and technified agriculture. This discussion group will be used to improve the online the resource guide online http://www2.planeta.com/mader/ecotravel/ag/

Some growers in the Dominican Republic are lucky to sell sustainable shade grown coffee for .85 a pound, although I believe I've read the "free-trade" price is approx $1.26. These same beans are then shipped and resold, roasted and resold wholesale, and inally packaged and resold retail. The pound of coffee that started at .85 can end up at $10.00 plus! Who's really making all the money? Does anyone know what the average price increases are as the bean goes from grower to drinker? For example, what is the average price that a small batch roaster will pay for a 100 bag of green specialty coffee, and so on?

Do you want to be interviewed regarding your experience with the coffee growers?? My name is Amy Au, I am a journalism student studying a master degree in the University of Westminster, London.Recently, I am doing a feature story on fair trade and the coffee issue. I have already been in touch with some groups based in London who are p omoting fair trade coffee to the consumer market. But to enrich my story (which is a 15-minute radio feature), I desperately need someone who has actually been to some of the coffee plantation and has witnessing information about the growers and producers and can tell me their stories. So, PLEASE, the organisers of the Coffee Contact, or any visitor to the site who have seen any of the coffee plantations, would you contact me??

My name is Rhonda Tranks - I am an Australian living in Cuernavaca. I organise Cooking Courses and conduct small cultural tours with specialist itineraries. (I also do a bit of writing). I am looking towards leading / conducting some specialist tours related to the Coffee, Cigar and Spice industries here in Mexico - which will probably centre in Veracruz. My idea is to attract a small group of people from US, Canada, Europe etc, who wish o have a "Learning Vacation" around coffee for example. I want to organise tours of farms, informal discussions, see roasting, even cooking classes connected with coffee and hopefully with accomodation on a working coffee farm, and general sight seeing ar und the areas concerned. My husband and I plan to take a trip to Veracruz from Cuernavaca sometime in the next few months - doing some research for the toursm hanging out and I'll also write an article or two as a result of the trip. Can anyone give me some leads - industry contacts, coffee farms which may be interested, PR for the industry, accomodation on farms (particularly old hacienda style inns) - ANYTHING! Much appreciated if you reply.
