Diablo & Diablo II : Story Summary
The Story of Diablo is quite an interesting one if you have read all the material that Blizzard has put out for this series.

If you start reading from the "Original" Diablo manual (as in you had to have bought Diablo when it had came out orginally [1996?] to get this manual) and then read Diablo II classic then expansion's you can get a pretty good idea of the storyline. However, if you're like me and managed to get the original Diablo right before games started comming in small boxes and didn't get the manual (like me: except a friend of mine has it) then don't worry, this is what this page is for!

Where it all began: A Town named Tristram

As we can tell from the first manual the Arch Bishop Lazarus was not originally of Tristram. Infact sources and letters in the manual state that he is a Paladian-Priest of the City of Kurast (across the ocean in the Kehjistan forests). So, Sankekur (the current head of the Zakarum Priesthood) sends Lazarus to meet a King who's ruled in Westmarch for awhile. His name is Leoric. So, while Lazarus is on his merry little way to Tristram-- Sankekur is guarding Mephisto (the second evils) soul stone. The Zakarum's headquarters (so to speak) is atop a desicrated temple to the Lord of Hatred and his Soulstone is chained deep below the new HQ. Sankekur's main job is to guard this stone. (and if you notice carfully-- the story lines of D1 and D2 overlap!) So, while Laz is on his way Sankekur is slowly being corrupted by the evil that Meph's Soulstone is leaking out!

When Lazarus reaches Tristram he meets up with the big man himself-- Leoric. So Laz becoming the right hand advisor to Leoric supports his desision to sieze Tristram and much of the Khanduras (the section of Santuary [Santuary being the world that Diablo is based on] that Tristram is in) Which, causes an uproar and almost a split between the knights that Leoric has and the morals of the men. The townsfolk, though, apparently dont mind the seizure that much, and go along with it.

However, Laz begins to neglect his dutys that he came to do. Sankekur had sent Laz over to guard and protect the Lord of Terror, Diablo's, Soulstone from being touched. The Monastary that Laz and Leoric have taken up HQ in actually used to belong to a ancient order of mages called the Horadrim (any of this making sense? Think Cain.) The Horadrim had used the monastary to guard the Soulstone and constructed the labrynth beneath the monastary as a safe guard. However, nothing is ever safe near hell--- and definatly not a Hellion Leader!

While they leave Diablo to stew in his own hatred in his Soulstone, they over look the one thing that he may be in a rock, but he can still contact people. he begins to summon the demons that you encounter in the labrynth to guard him and he slowly takes hold of Leoric-- who is convently sitting right atop HIS home. Leoric, though, proves to be a strong man of heart and spirit and while diablo is trying to knock this guy to his side, Laz notices a change. And so do Leoric's troops the Order of the Light Knights.

Leoric who's going mad sends out his army to attack the other towns of the Kahnduras. But one of his most trusted Generals Lachdanan decides he can't let his troops go on a suicide mission. So, he refused to let his troop go. Leoric calls him on betrayal and he is to be killed.

Lazaraus, while all this is happening. Feels the taint of Diablo and goes to find him in the labrynth one night. while he winds his way through the maze he comes upon a hellish alter with a red glowing stone upon it. and in a haze of maddness he shatters the stone-- leaving the Lord of Terror to come to the mortal  plane once more.

Some of you may be wondering why he all of a sudden is disobeying Leoric. Sankekur has sent letters to Leoric accusing him of not doing his job now that he learns Leoric has proclaimed himself king.  And it sounds as if Sankekur is troubled and wants to send more guys to this desolate town to help. Laz of course writes him back saying that he's fine and nothings wrong and he's doing his job. Sankekur gives up temporarly -- and just at the right time.

Now that our favorite ArchBishop has let a Terror loose he realizes that his Master-- after centuries of being in a stone needs a new body to inhabit. Hence his mental torucher on the King. However though Leoric is braking he is winning against Diablo. The Lord of Terror needs a Fresh man, and Innocent man. In a fury of Smartness, Lazarus decides he'll capture Prince Albrecht --- Leorics only son. He's Fresh, He's innocent and... He's corruptable.

So, While Leoric has disobeying knights and tyranny around him Laz sneaks by and captures Albrecht and delivers him to Diablo. Diablo, quite pleased at his success takes Albrechts nightmares of demons and creates more nastys for you to fight. he makes them real. and then he takes albrechts body with the help of a hand from laz-- he shoves the Soulstone in Albrecht's head, and Whala. New Diablo.
Now, Laz, wanting to keep up appearances no less, decides that he's gonna report back. By the time he's back Leoric is more crazed than usual. Lachdanan is being accused of disobeyment on the hightest order as well as his Order of the Light knights. and now he learns his only son is missing.

He goes crazy and decends to the church(ier) part of the monastary and Lachdanan and friends follow him down. Laz accompanies them too.

The town, you're wondering. she's forgot the town! Not yet folks.

About the town: They're in a mob now. Leoric had been changing the ruling tactics of tristram and accusing random people of his sons dissaparance and of random things that these poor townsfolk couldnt have even done. They all whip themselves into a mob and storm the monastary. Laz, of course is wholly happy that his master grand plan is working out just like he wanted to.

So we've got a crazy mob of pickaxe villages with torches, now in the monastary and torching everything, Lachdanan and his knights who are trying to kill Leoric and Laz who's telling diablo to bring out his nastys.

Diablo going for the i'm all evil thing, releases his hellion demons upon the poor townspeople (making Tristram the sad place that it is today) While the towspeople are being slaughtered  and cant find Leoric's son (or Leoric for that  matter) The knights are trying to calm the King down.

Leoric isnt listening though- and he pulls out his sword and starts swinging at the knights that once protected him. And now, they can't. Their comrads are dying or dead and their captain is reluctantly pulling out his own sword. The King and Leoric go at a battle for awhile, but Leoric is killing the troops instead and in a moment of sheer sadness and hate Lachdanan strikes Leoric down.

While Leoric is dying he calls down a devilsh curse and tells Lachdanan that he will serve him in hell. FOREVER!

Lachdnan is damned, and all are the knights and followers of the king (adding the death knigts to the mix of monsters) The King goes down, Laz becomes Diablo's Sidekick, The Town is slaughtered (well, pretty much at least.)

The Townspeople that have survived the monastary come out  running for their little lives and board up the monastary, leaving Albrecht to his own doom that they could not save him from. and they live in terror of the nastys that they know are now inhabiting the monastary. and they wonder where Laz has gone off to and how all this mess ever started.

(In D2-- Sankekur has gone nuts and the corruption of the Zakarum starts about now.)

And then there's you. The Hero. This is about where you come in. Wheither you're a Warrior of Westmarch come to save (or claim some gold and glory) and you've heard about the mad king. Or perhaps you're a Sorcerer from the Kejihastan jungles come for some lost knowlege you knew the priests left-- or the Rogue, hearing of Great doom that befell a small innocent town and you want to help. The Game is yours. and it's your turn to show Diablo--- Who's the boss!
