So, Maybe you're new to this world of Diablo, and you're thinking to yourself... Man, this version I got from the store (either Ver. 1.0 or Ver 7.0 [more likely to see 7 now a days]) sucks and I heard they got new stuff!!

Here's the solvent! On sites such as
Diabloii.net you can download any patch from any version of the game, dating back to Ver 3.0. There is good and bad things about every version of the game.

I know lots of people who prefer to play Ver 6.0 because it features a lot of Magic Find. and i know people who've stayed at Ver 9.0 because it's still classic. Whatever version you choose, enjoy it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The thing that makes Diablo II unique is the patches and the game content. If you're a veteran player and have been playing this game since it was released in early 1999(right?) then you know what I mean. Clearly on the box it states that Blizzard (or it's corparate owner: Viviendi Inc.) can at any  time update or change the content of the game. To some this  means new monsters, items, bugs, fixes, whatever to take advantage of.  And to other's it spoils the game for.
Just remember three basic guidelines that might save you some agony later!
1) When  you update your game (aka patch it)
The game will bring  you're current characters to that patch. (for example making you're 7.0 characters 9.0 characters) which means that they will now only be read by the game under (in this example) Ver. 9.0/  Which means, if you're computer crashes and you manage to back up your characters and you re install the game and it's ver 7.0..... the computer cant regonize you're characters are there: it sees them as ver 9.0.
So, always make sure that you *ABSOLUTLY* want to patch your game.
Otherwise.... make a backup of your characters from that version! That's the best way to solve that problem.
2) Use Battle.Net's system of patching at your own discresion.
Hackers - so they say can easily infect you're computer that way. So, go the Diabloii.net or to Blizzard's main site for the game download the patch manually there.
Another good thing about doing this is that you can now have any patches install file for the future if you decide to revert. most of the time Blizzard decides to take older patch files down. so if you have them yourself you dont have to go searching all over the net to find that patch again!
3.) Remember the differences between classic Diablo and Expansion Diablo.
Just like #1 the game thinks the same about converting characters. The game (thankfully) doesn't convert you're classic characters to expansion right away. You make that choice. However-- once you install the expansion you have to use expansion version patches. you can still play classic-- so no new monsters and new items or expansion only sets-- but still the enjoyment of being a Baron or a Baroness when you finish!
