Venus is the 2nd closest planet from the sun. However, it is also the hottest. Venus has a very thick atmosphere, composed mainly of Carbon dioxide, which prevents the escape of heat from the surface of the planet. The probes Viking 1 and Viking 2 have both landed on Venus, collecting soil samples. venus is close to Earth in size, around 12,100 miles. It orbits the sun at a distance of 108,800,000 miles. Venus doesnt hae any moons. In the northern hemisphere, there is a huge mountainous region known as the Ishtar Terra, which is about the size of Australia. It is unknow whether or not Venus has any ice caps at its poles, because these regions are uncharted for the most part. Venus may also contain active volcanoes, but this fact is also speculation. In fact, Venus is the most elusive inner planet, as very little is know of its structure and composure. Venus gives of an orange glow because of the immense heat contained on the surface. This heat can reach in excess of 460 degrees celcius, making colanization prospects dim, as no known living being can withstand such a heat. |
