Mars is the 4th planet from the sun. It is composed of sandy rock, and so, viewed from Earth, it has a red appearance, and is sometimes known as the 'Red Planet'. Mars has an atmosphere, although it is only thin. It consists mainly of Carbon dioxide. The surface of mars is very cracked, it also has canals, which may have once carried water. The largest feature on Mars is Olympus Mons, which is a huge volcano, 24km high. Mars's two hemispheres are completely different. The northern hemisphere is rocky and mouintainous, and the southern hemisphere is generally flat and desert-like. Mars has two ice caps, which could contain liquid water underneath them. Mars has a diameter of 6787 miles. It orbits at a distance of 227,900,000 miles from the sun. Mars has two moons. Mars is the only planet in the solar system (except Earth) that humans believe to be feasibly colonised. This is done by a process of TERRAFORMING, which involves introducing plants to the planets eco-system. |
