.HORSE APPLES

THE STORY OF THE BOOK:
This whole marvellous and very messy story sprang from just one image ( - perhaps a moment from my own childhood that I've succeeded in suppressing from conscious memory) of two boys flinging horse poop at a passing vehicle.
   I wrote an opening chapter getting my characters up to that moment, and sent it with an application to Creative NZ.  To my immense surprise they gave me a grant; - for a book about horse do-do!
   Well, it's not really.  As it says on the back;

THIS IS A STORY ABOUT
FRIENDSHIP AND LOVE,
HONESTY AND TRUST,
LEADERSHIP AND LOYALTY,
LIES AND CHEATING,
GREED AND REVENGE,
AND
HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY.
-OH, AND MANURE.
LOTS AND LOTS OF MANURE!
And yes, there is lots, and lots, and lots of manure!  I had a heap of fun writing it, and I hope you have heaps of fun reading it.

WHAT THE REVIEWERS SAID:

"NZ writer Ged Maybury makes no mystery of its subject.  Meadow muffins, manure, horse poo ... but there's more to this book than a whole lot of horse shit. ... No introductory waffle, no unnecessary background, Horse Apples starts as it goes on - with action! ... The description of [Randy] and Tammy's first kiss over the manure bags is one of the best parts of the book.  ... Never was the 'tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive' more tightly woven.
