Memories
An Autobiography by Victor Clarence Vaughan; 1926, The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis

William Moore Dameron (1799-1839, a son of George Ball) married his cousin, Eliza I. Dameron (1800-1873), and became a tobacco grower in Caswell County, North Carolina. The family Bible, now in my possession, shows that he was twenty and she nineteen when they were married. Both inherited slaves and life seemed fair in prospect, but soon the young husband realized that an old enemy to the family, pulmonary tuberculosis, had its grip upon him. Even at that time there was a well founded belief that an outdoor life was best for a victim marked by this disease. Therefore, with his wife, five children, four brothers, all of his negroes and much of his live stock, William Dameron migrated to Missouri in 1829. Two daughters, one of whom was my mother, were born to him after this migration. He purchased a farm in Randolph County and continued his former occupation of growing tobacco. The journey benefited him but did not secure the complete suppression of the disease. Therefore he began the practice of buying a drove of mules each year and taking them overland to New Orleans. Here these animals were converted into coffee, sugar and other staple merchandise and the return trip made by boat to St. Louis. In the Black Hawk War, William Dameron served with the rank of colonel. After his death (1839) his widow received some back pay from the government. This she converted into silver tablespoons bearing her late husband's name and these were distributed among their children. My grandmother leased her negroes to her sons and sons-in-law by the year. During the last years of her life she made her home with my mother. From this grandmother and the two great-grandmothers mentioned, also from my mother and other members of the family, I heard the story of my French ancestry as I have outlined it. One of my mother's brothers, the late James P. Dameron of San FrancisCounty published for private distribution in the seventies three papers on this subject: (I) Count Du Puy's Escape to America; (2) The Du Puys in America; (3) Autobiography. In the D. A. R. magazine of January, 1921, there may be found confirmation of this story by Edith Roberts Ramsburgh. It is said that an article by J. Esten Cooke in an early number of Harper's Magazine, entitled The Huguenot Sword, is founded on this story. One may read a further confirmation of my story in Kith and Kin by John R. Sampson, William Bird Press, Richmond, Virginia.

Notes for ANN D. SMALLMAN:
From Rose Ingram
According to 1880 Polk Co. Missouri Census records Ann was age 57 in 1823 and she was
born in Missouri and her father born in Canada and her mother in Missouri.
Living in same household was E. C. White aged 40 (1840) being sister-in-law to
Isaac Ingram. I am assuming E.C. is sister to Ann and perhaps a widow as her
last name is not Smallman as Ann D. Smallman was at time of marriage. BUT
E.C. White says she was born in Missouri. and her father in Kentucky. and Mother in Missouri.
I believe the Census taker could have make error in hearing Canada for
Kentucky.

The First Presbyterian Church of Somerset had its origin in the Pisgah Presbyterian Church which was organized March 26, 1828. This church was located about five miles south of Somerset. Several of its members lived in Somerset and had to commute between the town and the church. Some of these belonged to the church at Pisgah because their relatives did or because they had formerly lived in the community but had removed to Somerset. In 1860, a lot was procured on the corner of Water (Vine) Street. This lot was purchased from Jane Fox Caldwell on April 19, 1860. The building erected on this lot was completed in 1861. The first recorded minutes of this church were dated September 14, 1861. At this meeting of the Session, Rev. A.A. Hogue was elected moderator and W.M. Newell, Andrew Gibson, William Harvey and Samuel Owens were nominated as elders. These men were ordained at a congregational meeting later. Four deacons were also elected. Two of these were to serve the Pisgah church and the other two to serve the Somerset church. The first building was a frame structure. A letter written by Ben Zachery Ingram and preserved in the church records described the interior "with the walnut pulpit ad pedestals on which were tall red lamps, the marble communion table and the walnut paneled gallery in the back were the colored members sat."

See pg 539 in resource. They resided all their life in Lauderdale County, Alabama. Served in C.S.A.

Notes for OLIVE ELIZABETH KENNEDY:
In the summer of 1896, while on a visit to her son John Preston Brookes,
she died. Her son Benj. Taylor Brookes had gone to help nurse her and
brought her body back to Florence for burial in the Brookes lot of the
Florence cemetery.

"was the yuoungest of this large family. She attended the Synodical College in Florence; this fime institution provided a proper education
for young ladies. The whole block where the post office now stands was
college property; the dormitory was a handsome building with columns on
all four sides and was taken down to build the post office on the spot,
and the class rooms and chapel were in the building now occupied by the
Elks.

Her photographs show that she was an unusually beautiful woman; she had
charm and graciousness. She was quite talented in music; her first piano
was sold and in 1874 another, rosewood, was bought for her in Louisville
by her brother Elias; on this one Mother learned to play. In April 1954,
eighty years to the month after the piano was sent to the Brookes home,
it went to the Gosgas Home on the campus of the University at Tuscaloosa.
Her brother John Spinks Kennedy, eighteen years her senior lived in
Florence when she attended the college; after he became a widower he used
to spend a large part of the summers at the Brookes place; in fact all
the relatives seemed to love being there. She knew at the college
Elizabeth Koger, a first cousin of Jesse W. Brookes whom she met in this
way; they were married November 24, 1857 at the Kennedy plantation home
by Rev. Isaac Milner who married a Kennedy himself. She lived her entire
life in lauderdale County.B
