| * Remind yourself that all people are made in God's image. Ask God to help you see the intrinsic worth and dignity of every person rather than advocating ways of just reaching to crime - such as throuth quick arrests, trial and purnishments - consider more proactive ways to deal with it. * Think and pray about how you might help prevent crime in the first place. After someone you know commits a crime, maintain a relationship with him or her so that person isn't isolated and made to feel hopeless. Help establish and volunteer for programs that give convicted criminals opportunities to learn how Christ's love and power can help them heal and grow. * Mentor people with broken lives that place them at high risk of committing crimes, such as residents of inner cities and impoverished youth. Listen compassionately to their concerns. Be creative as you help them find ways to cope with and solve their problems without resorting to crime. * Help provide outlets for frustrated people to safely express their anger, such as through theater or dance classed that allow them to confront and explore the undterlying causes of their anger so they can begin to deal with it effectively. * Welcome people who have previously committed crimes into your church community, and encourage and support them as they seek to make better choices and grow more into the people God created them to be. |
