India Blues, Black-Shoulder  & Pieds
India Blue
India Blues are the "Classic" Blue Peafowl. Like the Black-Shoulder Variety they have lovely blue necks and tails, but unlike the BS birds they have Brown Barring on their wings. The Blue hens are a dusty brown color with a hint of green on their necks.

The Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) -often called India Blue- is the basis for all colors of peafowl EXCEPT the 3 true greens: the Java (Muticus-muticus), the Burmese (Muticus-specifer), and the Indo-Chinese (Muticus-imperator).

The wild type pattern (barring on the wings) is dominant genetically so 2 India Blue  parents may produce Black Shoulder chicks if BOTH carry a hidden Black Shoulder gene. Wild Type Blues that carry  a BS gene may have somewhat to much less contrast in their barring than pure Blues.
Black-Shoulder
Black-Shoulder is a pattern rather than a color. Black Shoulder Blues look like India Blues EXCEPT that their wings are solid color (black mixed with  iridescent blue, green & purple) .

Juvenile males and hens are white with black mottling (males keep more black than hens as they mature). Juvenile hens and some adult hens may have  green mixed with tan on their necks.

All colors of Peafowl can be Black-Shoulder pattern OR 
Wild Type pattern.
BLUE PIED &
Blue White Eye Pied
Pied also is a pattern that can occur on any color bird and can appear along with the BS gene. For a bird to be "loud" pied it must have a white gene along with the pied gene. Dark pieds only have the pied gene and may only be identifiable as pieds because of a white throat patch or white flight feathers. Silver Pieds have 80% or more white on any other color.

Our boy is an India Blue White-Eye Pied but his WE trait didn't appear until 5 yrs old, the year after these photos were taken!
