Determining Gender of Peachicks
Black Shoulder Pattern
Wild Type Pattern
Male                             Female
Male                              Female
Every year we are asked about how to "sex" or tell the gender of peachicks. Since a picture is the best way to show the differenece we have included this information here.

Gender of peachicks can often be determined by about 6-8 weeks of age though every year we have a few that are
"in between" and take longer to be able to tell for certain what sex they are. The difference in males and females of the Black Shoulder and Wild Type Patterns are shown above. These examples are of Blues, some of the lighter colored birds are harder to determine and take longer to be certain. In general, Black Shoulders are easy to tell from the time they get their patterned feathers. Wild type birds  all feather out with the barring of a male but females begin to loose the barring within a month or so, finally loosing it almost totally. Females USUALLY have lighter colored breasts than males but not always.

Greens, Spaldings and Whites are the exceptions. With white or green chicks it is either a "best guess'' formed by observation of the "attitude" and actions of the chick or a matter for DNA  testing. Often they are 18 months old before you can tell visually.
