In a time where the Ku Klux Klan was so rampant in Indiana that the state was commonly referred to as "Klandiana", seven school teachers decided to create an organization that would truly exemplify Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. An organization where African-American women could come together and support each other. An organization where education was foremost and could be used to help uplift the community. On November 12, 1922, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was born on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Seven illustrious school teachers are credited with this difficult task:

Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little
Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson
Vivian White Marbury
Bessie Mae Downey Rhodes Martin
Cubena McClure
Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford
Dorothy Hanley Whiteside

Through hardwork and perserverance, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. grew to have over 85,000 members inducted, members who work hard in various national programs that the Sorority deems necessary of our attention. These programs include Project Reassurance, the Mwanamugimu Project, Program for Africa, Project Wee Savers, and Operation Big Book Bag, among others. With our slogan "Greater Service, Greater Progress," we strive to make Sigma stand out in all of our endeavors.
