Iguana Creek contains three villages of three to four houses each, nestled within the protected GAI Maya reserve on lands previously clear-cut by invading ranchers. Each custom- built home in Iguana Creek is located on approximately one acre of land that is owned and maintained by GAI. Homeowners receive a 100-year, renewable land lease with the purchase of each custom-built home. A monthly, tax-deductible donation to GAI supports the maintenance of residential lands, common areas (pools, access roads and walkways, gardens, and community center), and the protected reserve. Adjoining pasturage for horses and other livestock is available at a minimal cost. Only residents and guests of Iguana Creek and GAI have access to the protected GAI Maya Wildlife Preserve. Residents are encouraged to assist in the feeding, maintenance, and cataloging of flora and fauna on the preserve, among which are vast numbers of baboons (howler monkeys), tepezcuintles, deer, toucans, parrots, and much more. For vacationing or non-resident Iguana Creek homeowners, GAI provides a rental program through its GAI Maya Center for Tropical Forest Research and Development. Solar Powered, Water Self-sufficient Living Each home is equipped with a solar energy system and a custom-made 3,000-gal, ground level water tank, plus two 260-gal elevated tanks to provide year-round pure rain water for showers and sinks. Piped water is used only for toilets. Room to Expand Each home is built on 9-ft stilts to provide for flexible expansion. Enclose fully for an additional 1,600 sq.ft. of living space; build enclosed storage and retain covered parking for vehicles; or leave it open for natural cooling and ventilation. |
