Most of the population of the South is formed by descendants of immigrants from Europe – particularly Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Poland. The region produces more than 80% of Brazil's wine and most of its superb-quality beef. The South's main tourist attraction is found at Foz do Iguaçu (state of Paraná), with more than 275 waterfalls, some more than 100 meters (330 feet) high. The Iguaçu Falls are nearly six times larger then the Niagara Falls. The “Lagoa dos Patos”, in the Rio Grande do Sul state, is the largest lagoon in the world and the largest city of that state, Porto Alegre, is the capital of the “Mercosul” (the Common Market of the South).
