Chapter 11
She didn't see why Jariya had to have an engagement party. Jiranan had thought it would be small and just exchanging rings. In annoyance, she stood by the door to accept the guests in. More ways than one, she was irritated and annoyed. Society! Blah. Why did Yui want to be accepted again? Oh, for the sake of her family's happiness.
Blowing an air of annoyance, she almost blew onto a lady walking in or glared at her. Jiranan rolled her eyes as she apologized. Her parents were staring at her but she paid no heed. Handing the basket of flowers to one of Jariya's friends, she walked in the reception and looked for a drink. But instead of returning to her place, she wondered into the balcony where she stepped into a lover's embrace or was it a quarrel? The shoes she wore clunked hard on the marble floor that the couple suddenly pulled away.
"Padom?" Jiranan nearly had a heart attack when she saw that it was her sister's fianc caught in the midst of another woman. Anger shot through her like bullets as she dodged at him, pulling the girl away. "What do you think you're doing? This is your engagement party and you're getting it on with this whore!"
"It's not like that," Padom tried to explain, reaching out for Jiranan's arms.
But she quickly pulled away. "I'm going to find Jariya and tell her of this disgusting behavior! I knew you were no good since the start!"
"Wait!" Grabbing her wrists, he pulled her back, but Jiranan refused to let this top her. Struggling fiercely, her fist struck his left cheek. In anger, he grabbed her arms and tugged her close to him.
At that same moment, Jariya was showing Andrew in to find her sister and when they stepped onto the balcony, they stared in shocked.
"Yui!" Jariya exclaimed, shocking Andrew even as much as the scene he was seeing.
"P'Ja!" Jiranan exclaimed, pushing Padom away from her. "It's not as you see---"
"How could you?" Anguish and betrayal marked every line in Jariya's face as more spectators came towards the balcony.
Her parents rushed up and saw Padom's cheek red and bruised while Jiranan's well-done hair was fallen down. Rushing up to Jiranan, they caught her arms and pulled her away. "What do you think you're doing, Jiranan? Are you out of your mind?"
"No," Jiranan tried to explain.
"I knew this would happen sooner or later," her father mumbled. "Your new self is no better than the old."
"You're always bringing shame," her mother added. "Don't you ever change?"
"But---"
"We will talk about this at home," her father strictly said. Turning to his guests, he tried to calm everything down. Her mother, on the other hand tried to soothe Jariya. Lost between the events, she suddenly wished she could disappear. No one was listening to her. And Padom was smirking at her. She wanted to punch the teeth out of the man when her father started to pull her out into the hallway of the reception hall.
"Go home, Yui." His order bewildered Jiranan. "This is enough. You wanted to play with fire and look what it ended up to? Your confidence is sick. Every man loves you. Why did you have to choose your sister's fianc?"
"I didn't, Daddy. He was with another woman and I---"
"What? Jealous to see him with another woman?"
"Not for me, Daddy!" Jiranan was growing frustrated by the moment. "Fine! I'll leave. I'm not going to stay in the midst of a bunch of idiots who don't even listen to reasons."
Suddenly, her father's hand smacked across her cheek and Jiranan cowered in pain before glaring at him with pain.
"I regret so much," he uttered in anger. "I regret having praised you. Having hope in you. I loved you as the meek daughter and then I come back to find this---this imp! And this is how you repay the family who loved you?"
"Loved me? You never ever once showed me any affection! You're always telling me how I shame the family, embarrass the family. I did everything to make you proud. I changed myself for you and that isn't enough?"
"I didn't ask you to change. I liked you the way you were. I want my daughter back."
"Be careful, daddy," Jiranan warned. "You might just get back that geek of a daughter. And then you'll be sorry."
She turned and stalked out of the hotel without noticing that someone was following her.
