Skeletal System
Important Bone Terms:

Foramen - Holes
Fossa - Depression (indent)
Fissure - Slit (where two parts merge)
Suture - Rough boundary between two bones (no articulation)
Articulation - Point at which two bones move together
Condyle - Process that articulates
Process - Part that sticks out
There are two major parts to the skeletal system:

1)      Axial Skeleton
              a)  The skull, spinal column and all bones that attach the limbs.
2)      Appendicular Skeleton
              a)   Makes up the limbs, ex: the arms and the legs   [appendages]

                                         Skeletal System Review
I.   Cartilage
          1. The three types of cartilage are hyaline, fibrocartilage, and elastic.
II.  Bone Structures
          1. The ends of a long bone are called the epiphyses.
          2. Compact bone has a continuous matrix with no gaps.
          3. Spongy bone has irregular interconnection spaces.
          4. The shaft of the bone is called the diaphysis.
III. Bone Development
          1. The two patterns of bone formation during fetal development are
                    intramembranous and endochondral ossification.
          2. Intramembranuous bones develop from layers of connective tissues.
IV. Bone Fuction
          1. The fuctions of bones are:
-Support and protection, body movement, and blood cell formation.
-Shape, support and protect body structures, store various inorganic salts.
V. Organization
          1. There are two parts of the skeleton, the axial skeleton and the appendicular
               skeleton
