Review Questions: Chapter 10
1. During his examination of the injured girl, the emergency room doctor asks if she has shown any emotions since Caldwell and Rachel found her. Caldwell states that she has not, but Rachel immediately offers one. What emotion did Rachel notice? Why would she be more likely to discern such an emotion in the girl than Caldwell would?
2. Why does Rachel feel unable to leave the girl in the care of the hospital after the task of taking her there is done? Is it simply due to the nature of her injuries? Do you think that Rachel would have felt the same way if she had met the girl under different circumstances? What do the events of this chapter, and the previous one, tell us about Rachel?
3. After leaving the hospital building, Rachel joins up with a group of demonstrators on the sidewalk. What do we learn about the group from this encounter? How is Billy's relationship to the group different than, say, Rachel's or Jennifer's? Why would such diverse individuals come together into such a group as this?
4. Towards the end of the chapter, Doctor Wheelan attends a meeting with the administrators of the medical center. How would you describe the tone of this meeting? Why does Doctor Wheelan seem to be more concerned with the Mayor's letter than anyone else? What parallels might there be between the group of people sitting around the conference table and the group of demonstrators assembled out on the sidewalk?
