Review Questions: Chapter 9
1. This chapter opens with two men conducting business in a hardware store. How would you describe their apparent relationship? One man is described as "lanky", the other as "portly". Why are the two men repeatedly referred to by these physical characteristics, rather than by their names or other attributes? Why is this convention no longer used after one of the men leaves the store?
2. Midway through the chapter, Caldwell and Rachel encounter one another in the hardware store. It is apparent that they have never met before, and Caldwell takes the opportunity to make advances toward Rachel. By the end of the chapter, however, an overt and mutual hostility has developed between them. What seems to be the root cause of this hostility? To what extent is it due to their personalities, and to what extent might it be due to other factors? (Refer to review question 3 from Chapter 8 for one line of thought.)
