Pre-Emptive Defense - Forces ***, Mind **, Time **, sometimes Prime **
Useful in a wide variety of circumstances, Pre-Emptive Defenses are designed to allow a mage to go into a dangerous situation confidant that if they are about to be attacked, their spell will automatically defend them. Double-layered for extra safety, it is difficult to trick this spell - although a botch could be disasterous! System: This spell is cast upon whomever you want to have the defenses, and requires a large amount of successes - for duration, damage, and effect. Duration simply determines how long the defence will cover you. Mind ** and Time ** make up the first part of the effect, and can use anywhere from one success up to work. They scan everyone around you for hostility, and for whether that hostility will translate into an attack within the next couple seconds. Mind shields alone won't work, because the Time magic still picks up the attack, and time shields alone won't stop the Mind aspect from detecting the plan. Having determined that an attack is about to take place, the spell activates its second phase - an energy blast with Forces ***. Using Prime ** will allow the blast to be aggravated damage. Successes spent on this part determine damage.
Timeskip - Forces *, Time ***
Another useful, but recent, innovation, Timeskip alters the flow of electricity through a system ever so slightly, causing it to replay whatever it was doing at the time the spell was cast. Every five seconds, the loop repeats itself. This simple effect, commonly used by Virtual Adepts, can freeze a computer, cause a calculator to go haywire, or trick a security camera into sending the same five seconds of film to the security staff indefinately. System: Another straightforward effect, Timeskip is usually coincidental - machines break down all the time. Successes past the first are spent to determine the duration of the effect. During that time, the machine will transmit the same five seconds worth of instructions. This can be an invaluable, and moderately simple, Rote to have.
