"By
The Way" may be the best album the Red Hot Chili
Peppers have ever done. It is certainly their most melodic.
It absolutely sparkles with good vibes, without being
"too happy". Lead singer Anthony Keidas keeps
the rhymes flowing as he meditates on life, love, and
the city of Los Angeles. Every member of the band seems
to be in sync and working like a fine tuned machine, churning
out good song after good song. The Peppers are showing
no signs of slowing down, and the music is not getting
stale. It almost seems to be going the other way...

It
might be a little presumptuous to say the Counting Crows
have "gone pop," but that's the best way to
describe their sound on "Hard Candy." The moody,
stripped down, rock that characterized earlier albums
has taken a back-seat to vocal harmonies, orchestral arrangements,
and catchy melodies. This works well on certain songs
such as "Butterfly in Reverse," "If I Could
Give All My Love...," or the title track, but in
others it comes across as "over the top." Adam
Duritz's introspective lyrics and unique voice pull you
in on an emotional level, especially on the slower songs,
and the music manages to get lodged into your brain pretty
easily. I really enjoyed the album, but "Hard Candy"
might be a too sweet for some.
