It
might be a little presumptuous to say the Counting Crows
have "gone pop," but that's the best way to
describe their sound on "Hard Candy." The moody,
stripped down, rock that characterized earlier albums
has taken a back-seat to vocal harmonies, orchestral arrangements,
and catchy melodies. This works well on certain songs
such as "Butterfly in Reverse," "If I Could
Give All My Love...," or the title track, but in
others it comes across as "over the top." Adam
Duritz's introspective lyrics and unique voice pull you
in on an emotional level, especially on the slower songs,
and the music manages to get lodged into your brain pretty
easily. I really enjoyed the album, but "Hard Candy"
might be a too sweet for some.
