Military of Friland
General information From ancient times the Frilanders have always been a warrior people and the country therefore has a strong military tradition. Due to the threat of war from neighbouring country Hiveria a lot of money is spent on the upkeep of a strong, well trained military. The standing army consists of 60,000 men. Apart from that there is conscription and all able-bodied citizens can be called upon in times of war. The Frilandic military doesn't have any nuclear, chemical or biological weapons. Neutrality Friland is neutral and not a member of NATO. However, it is a member of the NATO Partnership for Peace and it sometimes takes part in joint military exercises, especially with Iceland, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Scandinavian countries. Starting a war is something that Friland would not easily do: for centuries the country has been following the so-called "Ni airista hriþ" (No first attack) -policy, which prescribes that Friland can not start a war without having been attacked first. Conscription Conscription (harban or "military obligation") is fulfilled at the Fulkshar. Military service lasts for ten months and applies to both men and women. A choice can be made between military or civil service. In times of need every Frilander can be called upon to defend the country. For wars that don't involve defending Frilandic territory, conscripts may only be deployed on a voluntary basis. Ranks The ranks within the Frilandic military are equal for all departments:
The land forces consist of three departments: the Rikshar (professional army), the Fulkshar (reserve troops and conscripts) and the Sturmridars (elite forces). Rikshar The Rikshar ("Royal Army") is the regular army. When needed, this force can be deployed anywhere in the world. However, the most important task of the Rikshar is the protection of its own territory and slowing down an invasion until the Fulkshar is sufficiently mobilised for a counter-attack. Main divisions of the Rikshar: Fulkshar The Fulkshar ("People's Army") is the reserve army. Its task is to be able to quickly supply all other parts of the army with extra men and material during emergencies. Main divisions of the Fulkshar: Sturmridars The Sturmridars ("Storm Knights" or "Storm Riders") were originally royal bodyguards who were elevated to a chivalric order by king Þeudrik in the 15th century. Their name refers to the Ainharjars, the army of the dead led by the god Wodan, who are also called "Storm riders". The Sturmridars are the elite forces of the Frilandic army; they are known for their valour, disregard for death and their almost superhuman achievements on the battlefield. Main divisions of the Sturmridars:
Equipment The Frilandic military uses the following equipment: Motorcycle for rapid movement. Quads are used by fast, mobile teams like snipers, scouts and units with portable anti-tank or anti-aircraft missiles. Pickup truck Off-road vehicle. Lightweight armoured vehicle for reconnaissance, which can also be airlifted. Produced by the Frilandic company NWT. Armoured vehicle, offers protection against IED's. All-terrain carrier for use on rugged terrain. Van. Light truck for transporting troops and freight. Produced by the Frilandic company NWT. Heavy truck for transporting troops, freight, vehicles, weapon systems, etcetera. Modular system with interchangeable parts. Produced by the Frilandic company NWT. The fotwigarbrunwagan 1 ("armoured personnel carrier 1"), FB 1 for short, is a fast, lightly armoured vehicle that is used for transporting troops. Produced by the Frilandic company NWT. Multirole armoured fighting vehicle. The army has multiple versions of these, including cargo and troop transports, ambulances and vehicles for engineering and repairing.
Infantry fighting vehicle. Tank. The army also has recovery, engineering and bridge-laying versions of these. Light field howitzer. Armoured howitzer. Mobile rocket artillery (short range). Mobile rocket artillery (long range), joint project of the Frilandic companies NWT and SFÞW. Lufthar The Lufthar ("Air Force") has its own air bases but is also allowed to use all other airfields when needed. The army and the navy also have air units for support with certain tasks, but operating and maintaining these is mostly done by air force personnel.
Equipment The Frilandic air force uses the following equipment: Small reconnaissance drone for short distances, can be launched by hand. Produced by the Frilandic company SFÞW. Medium reconnaissance drone for long distances, needs a short runway. Produced by the Frilandic company SFÞW. Delivery drone with a tiltrotor. Used for transporting spare parts, medical goods, food, mail and other light cargo to ships or units in the field. Produced by the Frilandic company SFÞW. Kamikaze drone, suitable for swarm attacks. Produced by the Frilandic company SFÞW. Large attack drone for long distances, needs a short runway and can be equipped with multiple weapon systems. Produced by the Frilandic company SFÞW.

Tank and transport aircraft, also usable for medical evacuation. Multiple versions for transport, carrying VIP's and AEW. Combat helicopter. Multirole helicopter. Multirole helicopter, including versions with the Uwal ("Owl") AEW system for use from ships. Transport helicopter. Cruise missile, produced by the Frilandic company NWT. Surface to air missile system for long distances. Surface to air missile system for medium to long distances. For intercepting aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, short to medium range missiles, tactical ballistic missiles and presumably ICBMs. However, the exact capabilities of the Fram are kept secret. Produced by the Frilandic company NWT. Surface to air missile system for short distances. Close-in weapon system (CIWS) for very short distances. Adapted version named Bedskurddeuz ("Mantis"). Saihar Because Friland lies in the Atlantic Ocean, the Saihar ("Sea Force" or "Navy") plays an important role in the national defence. The Saihar uses the following material: Frigates The Saihar has ten multi purpose frigates of the Tiswald class. This class is named after historic Frilandic kings and forms the backbone of the fleet.
Amphibious assault ship An amphibious assault ship (LHD) is a combination of a helicopter carrier and a landing ship dock. It's equipped with a helicopter deck, landing crafts, room for a marine batallion with several vehicles, medical facilities and functions for command and communication. Transport and supply ships The FS Maginhard and the FS Nikwis are tankers. The other ships are meant for supplying ships at sea and transporting troops and material. Mine Hunters The mine hunters are named after sea animals. (Marswin class)
The Saihar has ten submarines with diesel engines and AIP (Air Independent Propulsion). These belong to the Langmark class and are named after Frilandic shires. (Langmark class) Patrol vessels
(Fulksmaht class) Besides that, it also owns fifty Hildbait 90's (Frilandic name for the Stridsbåt 90). These are used for patrols, coastal defence, rescues and as fast assault boats for marines. Other ships Besides the aforementioned ships the Saihar also owns an unspecified number of thug boats, training vessels, diving support vessels, RIB's (Rigid Inflatable Boat) and other support vessels. There's also an unknown number of old navy ships being held in reserve for emergencies. By the way, the prefix "FS" stands for "Friland skip" (Friland ship). Marine Core For the protection of ships and for conducting overseas landings there is a marine core named Swerdhwalan ("Killer whales" or "Orcas"). Main divisions of the Swerdhwalan: Organization The Saihar is divided into the following fleets, which are usually of varying composition: |
