Royal house

Frilandic kingship
In principle, the king can stay on as long as the people allow him to. This usually lasts until the king dies or voluntarily abdicates (because of his age for example) but he can also be deposed when he is no longer able to rule or when he has lost the support of the people.
Originally the king mainly had a religious and military function: he had to provide fertility to the land, the favour of the gods and victory in battle. In Friland the king has therefore always remained subordinate to the will of the people, even though he is the official head of state. These days the king is mainly a symbolic frontpiece of the country and a stable, binding factor for the people, although he still has a function as commander-in-chief and religious leader. In practice he could leave both matters mainly to his councillors, but his presence is expected at important religious and military events.

Difference from other royal houses
The Frilandic royal house is surrounded with few formalities in comparison with other European countries; according to ancient custom the king is still given a mantle and crown and then raised on a shield at his initiation, but at official events the king and his family wear the same clothing as the other attendants. In daily life they often wear the same clothing as the common citizen and it isn't out of the ordinary to see the king ride his bike through the city in a t-shirt and jeans while the bodyguards are following in three-pieced costumes.
Like most Frilandic nobility, the royal house has little to no historic ties with the other European royal houses because the country is not Christian, which made Frilandic nobles an unacceptable party for the mainland nobility, especially in historic times.
The Royal House only consists of the king and his parents, partner and children. The other family members of the king are part of the Royal Family, but not of the Royal House. However, at many public ceremonies they are also invited. Also, the monarch's spouse doesn't have to be of noble origin. Frilandic law has equal primogeniture (= no male preference), so that the first-born child is always first in line of succession to the throne, regardless of gender. On this page the word "king" can therefore also be read as "queen".

Titles
The king/queen is addressed with the title "kunung(in)", sometimes preceded with "mera" (renowned) or "hauha" (high one), which is equal to "his/her majesty" or "his/her highness". Previous monarchs may call themselves "fernkunung(in)" (former king/queen). The partner of the monarch receives the title "kunung(in)smak" (king's/queen's consort). There is no special title for their children except the usual "junkar" (lord) or "jungfro" (lady). In other languages the titles "prince" and "princess" are used to prevent confusion, which is what we will also do on this page.

The current Royal House
The official Frilandic head of state is king Waldrik. Together with his wife Amalgard and their four children he lives in the Fulksslut, the royal palace in the capital Riksgard. Waldrik's mother, former queen Gawița, is also part of the Royal House.

In October 2006 king Waldrik showed his diplomatic side when he managed to turn the visit of pope Benedict XVI into a succes, which was a remarkable achievement considering the bad relationship between Friland and the Vatican. His biggest feat however, was the Fifth Frilandic-Hiverian War (2009), in which he personally led the Frilandic army and achieved many victories over Hiveria, amongst others in the battle of Spirdung, the liberation of Runsburg and the campaign in East Walamark.
