Intro.
The name topaz is derived from the Greek word meaning "to shine" and also implies "fire"(Sanskrit word meaning "fire").  Topaz occurs in a range of magnificent colors - blue, pale green, varying shades of yellow, pink, red, brown and even black. Pure topaz itself is a colorless stone.  Some colors are unstable and can fade away; for example, brown topaz mined in Siberia can be bleached by sunlight.  In other stones, color changes can be induced by heating.  High energy irradiation and moderate heat treatment of colorless topaz can transform it to blue gemstones.   The name "Citrine" is derived from the French word for lemon.
During the Middle Ages, the topaz was used mostly by royalty and clergy.
Topaz was once thought to strengthen the mind, increase wisdom, and prevent mental disorders.
Legend has it that Topaz strengthens intellect, bestows courage, and drives away saddness.
Legend has it that an Indian princess pledged to the sun god, fell in love with a mortal, so angering the sun god that he struck them down, creating Citrine as his tear drops for his lost love.
Citrine symbolizes truth, integrity, hope, youth, health, and fidelity. |
