Social
Issues and Resources
For more information on the
social issues Lorna Johnson brings to light, or to learn more about
the benefit of education programs in prisons, visit the following
websites:
A
PBS documentary capturing the writing workshop that playwright Eve
Ensler ran at a women's
prison. She helps a group of women, many of whom were
convicted of murder, to come to
terms with their pasts, much like Michele Tarter does with "Woman
is the Word."
A report
by Bernard LoPinto detailing the benefits of prison education programs
and offering a list
of additional resources. He provides statistical data that
shows the rate of recidivism, or the
chances of a prisoner becoming reincarcerated once freed, are
less among those who enroll in
programs such as "Woman is the Word."
A website
showcasing the collaborative research by The Graduate Center of the City
University
of New York &
Women in Prison at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.
An
interactive website aimed at developing dialogues about the prison
system in schools and
communities so that crime and incarceration rates will drop.
A
non-profit organization advocating alternatives to incarceration and a
reform of the prison
system. Website analyzes the issues and provides access to
research, news reports, and
information on upcoming criminal justice events.
A report
based on Diane Sawyer's one-day experience as an inmate in a women's
maximum
security prison.
