DJ came to us in early 2001 with his "brother", Tiny. Their first owner had passed away and the family was not able to care for his two dogs. A rescue group in West Virginia, where the dogs were located, stepped in and offered to help transport the dogs to us in North Carolina. It took two days and a number of volunteer drivers, but both arrived here safely. The original plan was for us to foster the pair until a permanent home could be found, but because both dogs were elderly and had to be placed together, it made placement for them difficult. After being in foster care for several months with no offers for adoption, we decided to keep them. It had taken them months before they were comfortable with us, and we didn't want them to go to another home and go through that adjustment all over again.
DJ is not your typical Chihuahua. He's the only Chi I've ever known who doesn't like to be held and cuddled or even give "kisses". He likes to sit on your lap and be petted and have his belly rubbed, but it is very rare for him to consent to being held. At ten years old, he's still very active and will sometimes play with P-nut. However, he does not care much for the cats and will chase them every time he gets the chance.
DJ and Tiny were very closely bonded and it was obvious that DJ looked to his big "brother" for support and guidance. Sadly, we lost Tiny to cancer in June 2002. We were worried at first that DJ would not be able to cope with his loss. He did mourn Tiny for a long time, but gradually he has become more confident and has now taken over the position of "alpha dog".
