What you are
about to embark upon reading is a story that almost didn’t get written.
Over eight months
ago, I had just finished writing and posting a series of Stargate SG-1 stories
on the Internet called Kama Sutra. In
that series, I had a wonderful time constructing, developing and consummating a
relationship between Teal’c, and an original character called Doctor Kayla
Porter. When that series ended, the two
of them had rode off into the sunset happily ever after. They were happy, I was happy, and I hadn’t
seen a reason to continue writing that storyline any further.
Then ‘Crossroads’
aired on Showtime.
Sometimes it takes an episode like ‘Crossroads’ to
give a writer the kick in the pants needed to come up with the next story. After watching this episode, I told myself
that it’s a good thing fan fiction is out there, because there were a few
things I wanted to deal with. After
months of writing, re-writing, wearing out several videotapes, asking numerous
questions, and a good amount of handholding, this story grew from a small zine
submission to the novella you hold in your hands.
This story is set during the 4th season,
between the episodes ‘Crossroads’ and ‘The Serpent’s Venom’. Be warned there are several major spoilers
for that season throughout this work, especially for the episode ‘The Curse’. Also, this story was written before the
events in the 5th season episodes ‘Summit’ and ‘Last Stand’.
This foreword
wouldn’t be complete without me acknowledging the folks who have graciously
helped me when I needed it the most.
First off, thanks to Tracy LeCates for first introducing me to the process
of writing for zines. If it wasn’t for
your persistence, encouragement and support, I might never have had the courage
to do that first submission, or write this novella. Miki Seiler, editor extraordinaire, who has not only encouraged
me, but also made me a better writer through her editing. Thanks to Denise Petet for all the episode
dubs I asked for. Without those dubs I
would have gotten a lot of canon facts wrong and wound up with major egg on my
face. I also owe a great amount of
thanks to those folks on the Tea Room mailing list on Yahoo! Groups. Thanks for putting up with the endless
questions I ask, and for the wonderful information you’ve provided me upon
request.
A special thanks goes out to you, the reader. Whether you’re new to my writing or have
followed my story postings online, I truly hope you find this novella as
enjoyable to read as it was for me to write.
For those of you who have been waiting for this story to come out of its
fanzine statute of limitations, I sincerely hope it was worth the wait. And for those of you Teal’c fans who have
been eagerly awaiting a fic where he has more than a few lines to say or it
stuck on the periphery of the action, this story is especially for you.
