| The Takilma Road Project is a collaborative effort which addresses both sides on the noxious weed issue: Protection of public lands under seige from aggressive non-native plants Helping landowners take back thier land from noxious weeds |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Situation | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Takilma Road runs through private property and BLM lands which have populations of the aggressive noxious weeds Meadow Knapweed and Scotch Broom. The road then goes up into Forest Service lands. With these weeds traveling roadways the only way to protect the public lands from the threat of these weeds is to create and maintain Weed-Free Corridors into these lands. The Takilma Road Project is accomplishing this goal by coordinating the efforts of private landowners, local organizations and schools. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Weed Work | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In order to create a weed-free cooridor it is necessary to engage the various landowners, public and private, in the effort. For the Takilma Road Project the FAC Weed Crew is working on the public side of the roadway and community members of Takilma are working on the private side of the roadway to widen this weed-free corridor. The efforts of the FAC weed crew along the roadway are helping landowners get a handle on thier own weeds by removing the seed source along the roadway. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Community | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Education and outreach is an important part of the Taklilma Road Project. The FAC Weed Program Coordinator goes out into the community helping the people understand why weeds are a problem, teaching identification of problem weeds and advicing about weeding techniques to empower the landowner to self-determination of their private lands and the tools to accomplish that. The work of the Weed Crew and the various youth projects in Takilma are giving the community the hope they need to maintain to do the weed work necessary on thier lands. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
