The Vicar?s Letter
Dear Friends,
The church now enters the season of Lent and I suspect that the meaning and purpose behind this time is less well known than the festivals of Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. The origin of the season is not in remembrance of the forty days Jesus spent in the desert, but in the preparation of Christians for the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ, which we remember during Holy Week and Easter.
Origins of Lent
observance:
The observance of Lent was originally the final part of the preparation for those who were to be baptised at Easter and also those for those who had been excommunicated (i.e. banned) from the church for ?grave and public sin? and were to be readmitted, after a period of penance ! It was not long before the church realised that all Christians would benefit from a season of preparation, marked by penitence expressed in prayer and fasting. This sense of preparation, always with the expectation and hope that Easter brings, should characterise our season of Lent.
The popular idea of ?giving things up? for Lent, whilst missing the main point of the season, does help to express the spirit of penitence and also to serve as a contrast to the joyful celebrations of Easter. During the season of Lent this year, we have chosen to follow what I believe will be a very good study programme, details of which are given below. At a time when the world situation seems so confused, I hope that this course will help to put our faith into the right context in relation to the world around us and other faiths. I do hope that many of you will be able to take up this opportunity.
Service pattern:
We have ?tweaked? our pattern of services so that each parish will have a service every week. On the 3rd Sunday of the month we now have an 8.00 am BCP Holy Communion at Nailsworth and on the 4th Sunday John Avery (from Leighterton) will take Morning Prayer at 9.30 am at Kingscote. Also we have a new ?Village Service? at Horsley, where the pattern has been re-arranged. In due course, I would also like to add a United Benefice Service which could move round our churches. It is hoped that this service pattern will encourage growth in all our churches. It should be noted that I cannot cover all of these services myself, but am relying on the continuing help of Rev Jeff Green, Sue White, John Avery and Rev Lawrie Smith.
The Reverend Stephen Earley
Lent Study Groups
Our parish will not be arranging its own Lent Meetings this year. Instead we have decided to encourage parishioners to join in with the extensive ecumenical programme which has been put together by the Nailsworth Churches.
All of the alternative groups will use the same material, entitled New World, Old Faith, which is sponsored by the Archbishop of York and is available in a booklet costing £2.50. The groups run during five consecutive weeks, and the start dates and other details are as follows:
Mon 10 Mar 7.30 pm Portland House Barry Cowls
Tues 11 Mar 10.00 am Concord Centre Margaret Marshall
Tues 11 Mar 2.30 pm St George?s Maiwen Harvey
Wed 12 Mar 1.30 pm St Mary?s Fr Piers Linley
Thurs 13 Mar 2.30 pm Hannover Centre Mary Gee
Thurs 13 Mar 7.30 pm St George?s Delphia Gaiger
Fri 14 Mar 2.00 pm Christchurch Wilma & Morton Crooks
The themes for the five meetings are: Brave New World, Environment & Ethics, Church & Family in
crisis, One World Many Faiths, Spirituality & Superstition.
There is no obligation to attend all of the meetings in the series. Transport will be shared where possible.

We met up at the home of Jane Bateman to have a Poetry Evening on January 28th. Jane made us all very welcome, everyone read a poem and the evening went by far too quickly.
A visit to the Costume Museum at Bath was planned for 13th February but owing to lack of numbers able to attend, had to be cancelled.
Our next event will be a trip to Gloucester Docks on 13th March. All to meet at the Village Hall at 10 am.

The Village Barn
Dance
The Barn Dance on Friday 7th March was a great success, enjoyed by over 60 parish residents and visitors of all ages. All will wish to thank Mr and Mrs Higgins and their team for providing the facilities, music, food and drink for a truly memorable evening, not to mention the clearing up afterwards. The PCC thank them also for the generous donation of £220-76 towards church funds. Two raffle prizes are so far unclaimed - blue tickets 188 and 460. These are valuable items with a good shelf life, but if they are not claimed by 7 March they will be given to the Village Hall Committee for their next raffle.

Churchyard
Floodlighting
The installation has been
completed by the contractor to the requirements specified and awaits formal
signing off by a qualified inspector.
However the result is not completely satisfactory as the lights are
rather bright and very white.
Whilst the PCC were clear in their
original wish to have a warm yellow light, similar to the temporary arrangement
tried previously, the Diocesan experts strongly advocated the latest ?metal
halide? lamps which give a more natural light.
The PCC are working to try to find a more satisfactory standard of
illumination. When this has been
achieved, it is proposed to operate the floodlights between dusk and 10.00 pm
on normal Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, as well as during the Christmas
festival.
Parishioners are reminded that this project is funded by the CDC through a Ward Grant aimed at improving our village environment.
