This Christmas the PCC once again received a generous donation from the Reverend J de Chazal - a former Newington Bagpath with Kingscote parish Priest - towards the Fabric Fund. He and Mrs Shorey have maintained contact since he left around 1961. We have thanked him on behalf of the parish for this very kind gesture.

Don?t forget the Village Barn Dance being held on Friday 7 February as a result of a kind initiative by Geoffrey Higgins. Full details on back cover.

The next PCC meeting will be on Tuesday 25th February at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall.

Following the departure of Kay Brightley, we now need to appoint one new sidesperson, and in a few months to find at least one new member for the churchyard mowing team. The sidesperson is required to assist in the preparation and clearing away for one Sunday service each month. Mowing team members generally ?adopt? a particular section of the churchyard and mow when the spirit moves them. Please contact a member of the PCC if you are interested in helping in either of these roles.

The Vicar?s Letter

Dear Friends,

I had intended to write a letter encouraging you all to consider joining one of the Lent groups that I hope will be running through our joint benefice during Lent, but the following exchange overheard as I was collecting my evening paper changed my mind:

?How are you ??

?Struggling on. How?s yourself ??

?Surviving. That?s what it?s all about, isn?t it ? Survival.?

This exchange brought to mind a dinner party we went to just before Christmas when one of our friends commented that life was a bit of a struggle and we then had a heated discussion as to whether any of us could call our lives ?a struggle? when people in other parts of the world were suffering the effects of starvation, famine, war and diseases. Since that time two incidents have brought this home to me.

A friend from Cheltenham, whose son-in-law works as a water engineer for Tear Fund in Ethiopia, wrote - ??. the famine in Ethiopia is an anxious time: all employees of their church have given up one month?s salary and are having several fund-raising events to help the people; the people are eating the same plants as the cows, but the humans boil theirs, that?s the only difference.? And she commented ?We don?t know we?re born, do we?? Foraging for food in competition with the animals in order to feed our children ! Now that?s what I would call a struggle !!

Jill Woods, a member of St George?s Church choir, returned ?home? to Zimbabwe over Christmas to visit her family. We were very concerned for her welfare while she was away and were delighted to see her return safe and sound. She has written a short account of the situation she found over there - her 80 years old father getting up very early to queue for a loaf of bread (perhaps) or for petrol in the heat of the day, and of the land returning to the wild in a country once known as the ?bread-basket of Africa?. That a systematic plan to starve many of the people in the country should be allowed to continue beggars belief in the civilised world we live in - But that is what is happening.

Would our Lord Jesus be happy for us to be signing up for Lent groups or would our time be better served lobbying our MPs ? Of course we could do both ! I am aware of the saying that we should not be so heavenly minded that we are no earthly use to anyone !

Please let me know what you all think we should be doing.

Lent Courses

Notwithstanding the above, it is hoped that we will be running Lent courses with our friends from Christchurch entitled New World, Old Faith although as yet we have not seen a copy of the course material. Sign-up lists should be appearing in all of our churches. It is a good idea to join a group of people you don?t know so well, whether in a different neighbourhood or church. It is intended that a variety of times, places and venues will be offered.

Sunday Club

Thank you to those who responded to the questionnaire sent out in January. Eleven families responded very positively, keen to contribute to a Sunday Club in the parish of Newington Bagpath with Kingscote.

The preference of the majority was for regular meetings on a Sunday morning, so we shall continue with our pattern of an 11 am meeting on the second Sunday of the month.

Some families commented that they could not commit to attend every month, but would try to support the club on four sessions per year. This would be welcome. Likewise, if you have visitors who might like to attend, we would be pleased to see them.

We would be grateful if you could telephone Elin to let us know who will be attending each meeting as it affects the organising of resources.

The first meeting of 2003 will take place on Sunday 9th February at 11.00 am in the Village Hall. We hope to see you there.

Janet Davies and Elin Tattersall

Village Walk

On Boxing Day 24 people of all ages from Kingscote and Bagpath, including their guests, gathered at Windy Corner for a walk through part of the Ozleworth Valley. We were extremely lucky with the weather - it nearly felt like a spring day and the backdrop of indigo clouds passed us completely by. Everyone went their own pace and distance, and we all agreed what fun it had been. Perhaps we should turn this into an annual event ?

Bring and Buy

Alice and Lucy Marsh thank everyone who came and supported their Blue Peter Bring and Buy sale on Saturday 4th January. £40-45 was raised for the ?Waterworks? appeal which helps African villages to obtain a clean water supply.

Church Restoration Progress

As most Kingscote residents will have noticed, the builders have finished the current programme of work which has involved replacing the lead on the tower roof, re-pointing the turret and tower, reworking the carved parapets around the roof of the Lady Chapel and Vestry, restoring the gutters and re-leading some of the windows.

We are delighted with the result and, subject to the architect?s final inspection, expect to be able to pay the final invoice without problems. The PCC are particularly grateful to John Paton who has acted as our co-ordinator with the architect and builder. We will give a fuller final report in a later issue when we have paid the final bill !

The installation of two permanent floodlights will be completed shortly and we also hope to be able to re-start work on the restoration of the Table Tombs in the spring.
