We wish the vicar’s wife Helen Earley a speedy recovery following her recent visit to hospital and we look forward to seeing her again soon in these parts.

All residents in the parish are invited to the  Annual Parish Church Meeting which will take place on Monday 7th April at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall.  At the commencement of this meeting the PCC officers will be appointed for the coming year.  Nominations should be supplied to the secretary beforehand.

We would like to encourage parishioners to consider leaving something to the church in their will, and we have included a brochure on this subject with this magazine.  It is important for all of us to have a formal will to avoid problems for our heirs after our death, and a legacy can easily be incorporated.  Some further leaflets are available in the church, and Brooks Childress has agreed to become the Legacy Officer and will provide guidance on this subject in complete confidence.  Call Brooks on ( See paper version of Forerunner) to discuss what is involved.

The Vicar’s Letter

Dear Friends,

At the time of writing it appears that the war with Iraq is inevitable.  This comes a week after Comic Relief when we were pleased with the millions of pounds raised for many worthy causes, in this country and in other countries.  The images and stories we saw during the programme are, in many cases, heart rending and we know that relatively small amounts can help change lives.  What might seem to us to be a corrugated iron shed is to others a house to be proud of !

Yet billions of pounds will be spent on this war and many good buildings will be destroyed, and it all seems rather pointless.  Then we remember that Sir Winston Churchill was advocating war against Germany at a time when others saw no threat.  We must trust our elected leader at this time and give full support to our troops now that the decision has been made.  Having regard to all the reports of the secret weapons that Saddam has hidden away, and the chemical gases it is alleged he has been developing, they must all be fearful as to what will be thrown at them.

Towards the end of this month, we celebrate Easter.  We have a full programme of services throughout the benefice, shown on our calendar opposite, and I do hope that many will attend  them.  At this gloomy time we need to get things into perspective and hold onto the hope for the future  that belief in our Lord Jesus Christ brings to us.

Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen to him as he set his way towards Jerusalem and he was resolute in his determination.  Through his death and resurrection he conquered sin and death, and showed us the way to live that brings ‘ fullness of life’.  We were created to love and worship God, and if we do not have God in our lives there is a void that nothing else will fill.

In these uncertain times I would encourage all of you to come to church add your prayers for a speedy end to the conflict, and to take away with you ‘ peace that passes all understanding’.

Sunday Club

Thank you to all of the children who took part in the delightful Family Service and Baptism in March.  The play - Daniel in the lions’ den - was enjoyed by all.

Sunday Club in April will take the form of a Palm Sunday procession to the church for Family Service.  The Kendell family have kindly agreed to provide a donkey for the occasion.  If any children would like to play a musical instrument during the procession, please let Elin know immediately (Tel. See paper version of Forerunner).  Meet at the Village Hall, 13th April, 10.50 am.

Janet, Elin and Jenny

Altar Guild

We will meet in the church at 2.30 pm on Wednesday 9th April for our regular cleaning session.

 The Royal Maundy

As many readers will already have heard, Mrs Iris Shorey of Rose Cottage -  Kingscote, who has spent most of her life in the parish, has been nominated to receive the Maundy Purse on Thursday 17th April in Gloucester Cathedral.  During this colourful and historic act of worship the Queen will distribute purses to 77 men and 77 women who are over 70 years of age, who have contributed to the life of their church or community by their Christian service.  Christian ministers of religion throughout the county nominate the recipients.

At a briefing address on 15th March, the Bishop of Manchester - who is the Royal Almoner - described the origins of the ceremony.  At the beginning of the 13th century the English kings instituted a Lenten penance which recalled Jesus washing his disciples’ feet on the evening of the Last Supper.  They washed feet and gave alms to a representative group of ordinary citizens.  The ceremony lapsed at various times, and no longer includes feet-washing, but our present Queen  has been one of the most dutiful in carrying it out and has expressed her pleasure in doing so.

We are all delighted by this news and send Iris our very best wishes on the occasion of this well deserved  recognition.  She will be accompanied on the day by Rosemary Sims, Vida Sutton and Harry Tubbs.

A trip to Batsford Park Arboretum is on the agenda for Tuesday 8th April.  The park contains a private mansion which was once the home of the ‘Mitford girls’.  All meet up at the Village Hall for 10.00am.  Unfortunately our March trip to Gloucester Docks had to be cancelled owing to members being otherwise engaged.

Tetbury Hospital News

A reminder that the hospital now only treats minor injuries, with staff available between 8.00 am and 4.00 pm.  For anything believed to be serious you are advised to go to the 24 hr Accident and Emergency Unit at Gloucester Royal Hospital.

Tetbury Hospital always needs volunteers to entertain  their longer stay patients -reading, playing cards, going for walks - and this can be on a very occasional basis.  If you think you can spare a little time, contact the hospital (Tel. See paper version of Forerunner).

Forthcoming fund raising events organised by The Friends:

Concert by the Swindon Male Voice Choir at Sir William Romney’s school on Friday 4th April at 8.00 pm - tickets £4 single or two for £6, available at Tourist Office, the hospital or at the door.

Fashion Show and Lunch at Westonbirt School, presented by ‘Alisam’ of Tetbury on Tuesday 15th April, commencing with a wine reception at 12.30 pm.  Tickets £20 from Diane Vincent (Tel.  See paper version of Forerunner) or from the hospital.
