Eye exam Sept. 13, 2008 by Dr. Cheryl Cullen

Ryder has a note on both his left and right eye.  The note on his right eye, which is of no concern according to the Ophthalmologist, is that he has Persistent Pupillary Membranes (PPM).  "Persistent pupillary membranes are strands of tissue in the eye. They are remnants of blood vessels which supplied nutrients to the developing lens of the eye before birth. Normally these strands are gone by 4 or 5 weeks of age." (Canine Inherited Disorders Database, http://www.upei.ca/cidd/Diseases/ocular%20disorders/persistent%20pupillary%20membrane.htm)

Ryder has the 'Iris to Iris' kind, which from my research of PPM, seems to be the best kind to have, as it does not cause seeing opacities or cataracts.  Usually dogs with PPM have absolutely no issues or problems, and the PPM do not grow or change over time.  Right now researchers have no idea how PPM is inherited.

However, on Ryder's left eye he has Punctate Capsular Cataracts.  Punctate means the smallest size of cataracts, and capsular means that it only touches the capsular level/area of the eye.  Dogs with Punctate Capsular Cataracts still pass their CERF exams, and if the significances of the cataracts are known along with the pass then it is a breeders choice note.  However, since this was Ryder's first eye exam the significances of his Punctate Capsular Cataract is unknown.  He will be rechecked in a years time.  The Ophthalmologist said that the type of Cataract he has usually did not change over time, but of course the risk is still there.  To learn more about Cataracts and reading CERFs with cataract notes, please visit CERF 101.

Ryder is on a Non-breeding contract pending the pass of his health clearances.  At this time, we do not plan to breed Siberian Huskies, so these results are little to no concern for us.  As long as our beautiful Ryder boy is healthy and happy.  He will be rechecked in the Fall to see the significant of this issue.
