CERF for Ch. AuxArcs Following Seas PCD, HIC, "Q"
Eye exam Sept. 13, 2008 by Dr. Cheryl Cullen |
|
Q has notes on both his left and right eyes. As we knew from his 2006 eye CERF, Q has minimal distichiasis (extra eye leashes) on both eyes. The Ophthalmologist said he only has 2-3 extra eye leashes on each eye, which is of absolute no concern. However, what we did not know before, is that Q also has Persistent Pupillary Membranes (PPM) in his left eye. "Persistent pupillary membranes are strands of tissue in the eye. They are remnants of blood vessels which supplied nutrients to the developing lens of the eye before birth. Normally these strands are gone by 4 or 5 weeks of age." (Canine Inherited Disorders Database, http://www.upei.ca/cidd/Diseases/ocular%20disorders/persistent%20pupillary%20membrane.htm) Q has the 'Iris to Iris' kind, which from my research of PPM, seems to be the best kind to have, as it does not cause seeing opacities or cataracts. Usually dogs with PPM have absolutely no issues or problems, and the PPM do not grow or change over time. As well, the Ophthalmologist told me that she considered Q's PPM to be of "no concern". Right now researchers have no idea how PPM is inherited. Since PPM is a breeders choice note, and as far as I am aware, non of Q's siblings or parents have it, so at the moment we are not too concern with it being something running in his family. As well, since Q is a great quality dog, we are still keeping him in our breeding program. We will be extra careful screening any potential mates for him, and he will only be crossed with females with CERF passes without notes, and having pedigrees that are considered to have low risk eye issues. |
