Soaring Summer Schedule

June 2008 -- Flying Toastmasters will be meeting on the second and fourth Thursdays of July and August.  We will be reverting back to weekly meetings in September.  Scintillating!

Exciting Club Officers Training

June 25, 2008 -- MDA will be hosting this Summer's club officers training.  Training starts at 7 p.m. at 13800 Commerce Parkway.  Yes, I know it is a Wednesday night.  But there's nothing good on T.V. anyway.  (Non-club-officers are welcome to participate too.)

International Speech Contest and Speech Evaluation Contest

March 2008 -- Contest season comes but twice a year!  The International Speech Contest and the Speech Evaluation Contest are coming up and Flying Toastmasters needs contestants.  Please contact Irene or Gladys if you are interested.  Note that to be eligible to compete in the International Speech Contest you must have completed at least six speeches.

Toastmasters Week Division E Open House

February 6, 2008 -- Come celebrate Toastmasters Week with the community by attending the open house on February 6 (Wednesday).  The event begins at 6:30pm and ends at 9pm and will be held at WorkSafe BC on 6951 Westminster Highway in Richmond.  The event is hosted by Comp-Talk Toastmasters club but our division governor is making it a division-wide event.  The featured speaker is Dr. Laugh (a.k.a. David Granirer).  Everyone is welcome.

District 21 EXTREME ATTITUDE Membership Contest

January 6, 2008 -- Help Flying Toastmasters qualify for this exciting by joining by March 31.  Clubs with at least five members joining from January 6 to March 31 will be entered in a draw for $100 for the club to use toward items in the Toastmasters International store.

Division E Officer's Training and Our First Officers' Meeting

June 23, 2007 -- Thank you to all officers (and Peter too, who isn't even an officer yet!) for coming to training today. Flying Toastmasters was one of only two clubs in Division E to have all of its officers present. Division E Governor Ilan even honoured our club by asking us to stand! (I would have been pleased if we had been rewarded with the leftover chocolate muffins. My, there was a lot of food!

Special reminder for club officers:

Please pick up your officers’ manuals from Irene.

Now on Summer Schedule

June 6, 2007 -- The lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are upon us again.  Flying Toastmasters are flying off to exotic locales and ports of call.  The time has come again for us to implement summer scheduling.  Flying Toastmasters will hold meetings on the second and fourth weeks of June, July, and August.

Here are the next meetings: June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26, August 9, August 23.

Other clubs you might try visiting when Flying Toastmasters does not meet: Rich-Del (Thursday), Dragon Masters (2nd and 4th Wednesday), Richmond Toastmasters (Tuesday), enRICHed Speakers (Wednesday), Global Speakers (Monday), Leading Edge (1st and 3rd Friday), Comp-Talk (Wednesday), and Richmond Achievers (Wednesday).

Exciting Officer's Training

May 30, 2007 -- As if the Region I conference in Rancho Cordova weren't exciting enough, here in Richmond we are having a gathering of local Toastmasters!

Who: you
What: Division E Officer's Training, bring $2-$3
Where: MDA, 13800 Commerce Parkway, Richmond, BC
When: June 23, 10am-12pm
Why:

1) Because not everyone can make it to Rancho Cordova, or even knows where that is.
2) Because the admission fee is much lower.
3) Because Irene is one of the trainers (Secretary table).
4) Because the speakers are usually really good.
5) Because you get to meet other Toastmasters.
6) Because Flying Toastmasters needs 4 club officers to attend to qualify toward the Distinguished Club Program.
7) Because non-club officers will get to sample a club officer role in only 2 hours, without any further commitment.
8) Because you will just sleep away your Saturday morning anyway.

Hope to see you there!

P.S. Trivia question of the week: which provinces and states are included in Region I? (Answer to be revealed on the blog when I find out myself!)

First Ever Mock Speech Contest

May 11, 2007 -- Are you as excited as I am?  Flying Toastmasters will hold its first ever mock speech contest next week on May 17. Six days left and counting.  I have just finished printing the judging ballots, timing sheet, counter sheet, and certificates.  Please come out to this meeting and support our first mock speech contest.  We still need last-minute timers, counters, and judges (all of which of easy positions).  Thank you to Renee and Peter for their courage in being contestants for the speech contest.

Semester is Over

May 8, 2007 -- My semester at UBC is finally over. My it has been a long time since the last post!  Now that I have more time, and have had a wonderful vacation of 3 days and 7 nights in Waikiki (ha ha ha), I can get back to industriously updating the website.  Hopefully, I can hand over the website maintenance to someone else soon because club officer elections are coming and I do not want to be VP Public Relations again!

That's right folks.  The fiscal year end is coming fast.  If you would like to be a club officer, please send your name in to Irene soon.

If you would like your educational award to count toward this year's DCP contest, please send in your applications to Gladys forthwith.

If you do not understand the meaning of "forthwith" you should come to Toastmasters more often.

Club Public Relations Survey

May 8, 2007 -- Our first survey ever (that I am aware of)!  It went over relatively well, considering that I forced everyone present several months ago to fill out the survey.  The main conclusion is that word of mouth is the most effective means of brining in new members.  So this website is nice to have, but overall not that effective, apparently.  If you would like a copy of the survey please come to our meeting so I can give you my contact information in a secure environment.  Or maybe I should get the "Link" newsletter to publish it...

Another lesson learned is that surveys are very important for club executives.  The more effort put into filling out surveys, the more the club will improve.

Toastmasters Week

February 3-10, 2007 -- What special event will we have this week?  Check back to find out!

Cold

January 18, 2007 -- I hope that you all have finally warmed up after our meeting this evening - the room was cool, but we had good spirits and a warm friendly atmosphere.  Congratulations to SK on completing speech # 2 and Justin for completing # 4. Very interesting and food for self and thought (toast and global warming!)  Thanks to Renee for once again Chairing the meeting for us.  Welcome to our guests Crystal and Juliani, and Welcome back to Luis - so good to see you!  We hope to have you back with us next week too.

Thank you Gladys for writing this week's update.
