Edmond Gets Published

December 28, 2006 -- Yours truly is in the latest issue of The Link.  Far out!  If you wondered what it was like being in the Humorous Speech Contest last fall, you can read all about it in my article (requires a pdf reader).  If you do not have a pdf reader, you can find a copy in the resources section.

Last Meeting of the Year

December 7, 2006 -- The only December meeting of the year!  We had an excellent speech from Gladys and a fantastic evaluation from Brian.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.  The next meeting is January 4.  Remember to let Gladys know if you would like to be on the waiting list for a position on January 4.  And please bring ideas for Toastmasters Week!

Snow!

November 30, 2006 -- Flying Toastmasters is snowed out this week.  Our weekly meetings will continue on December 7.

More New Guests

November 16, 2006 -- Flying Toastmasters extends a warm welcome to guests Ravi, Tina, Janet and Kevin.

New Members and Guests

November 9, 2006 -- Flying Toastmasters is pleased to welcome S.K. and Peter, who are among our latest members.  We also extend a warm welcome to guests: Barbara and Ivy.

Let's Get Blogging!

November 9, 2006 -- Flying Toastmasters launches a blog!  This is Flying's latest flight into cypberspace.  It is a public relations campaign that will keep existing members and potential members informed about the latest techniques in public speaking and details about Flying Toastmasters that we did not have enough time to discuss during the meeting. It is manned by two fictional characters, Mr. Toast and Lady Butterworth.  If you have a question about Toastmasters or public speaking, ask either character and they will answer.  Blog on!

Speech Contest Winners Revealed

November 1, 2006 -- Drum roll please.  After an exciting round of speech contests (club, then area, then division level), there are now two speakers to represent Division E (Richmond and parts of neighboring cities) in the District 21 (British Columbia) speech contest at the Fall Conference on from November 17 to 19.  Richard Edwards will compete in the humorous speech contest and Kurt Preinspurg will compete in the table topics speech contest.  Both competitors are from Area 52.  That is our area!  Ken, our Area Governor, must be very pleased, or he would be if he were not in London right now.  For a riveting account of the speech contest process, be sure to read Edmond's article in the next issue of The Link newsletter.

Laughter is the Best Medicine and Table Topics is the Best Revenge

October 12, 2006 -- Make 'em laugh or make 'em cry.  We need someone to represent Flying Toastmasters at the Area 52 Speech Contest (see below).  To qualify, you need to have paid your dues on time and you need a burning desire for some fun.

Area 52 Speech Contest: Come One, Come All

October 12, 2006 -- Are you putting on  fat from the lazy, hazy, crazy days of winter?  If you are, or aren't, what better way to burn off some fat than laughing it off at the Area 52 Speech Contest!  The Area 52 Speech Contest will be held on October 12 at 8660 Ash Road, Richmond.  Registration is at 6:30PM and the contest starts at 7PM.  There will be a Humorous Speech Contest and a Table Topics Speech Contest.  Oh yeah.  Yours truly will be competing in the Humorous Speech Contest on behalf of Flying Toastmasters.  So come on out and cheer our club on!  Just follow Irene's car after the meeting.

More New Members

Sept 28, 2006 -- Flying Toastmasters welcomes the latest additions to our fleet: Jon, Justin, and Joyce.  Jon, West Richmond's Youth Coordinator, is an accomplished theatre sports athlete.  He is affiliated with Tickle Me Pickle.  Their next show is on November 2 at the West Richmond Community Centre.  Justin is a student, a future doctor, and hopes to get his pilot's wings in the near future.  Joyce is a loving mother who never seems to tire from driving her kids around for Taekwondo, golf lessons, swimming lessons, ski lessons, and so much more.  Flying Toastmasters also welcomes new guests Matt and Steve, and returning guests Linda, Alan, and Trevor.

Jon and Justin Complete Icebreakers, Dorothy Chairs

Sept 21, 2006 -- What an exciting meeting today.  We heard a couple of great icebreakers and had our resident songbird chair the meeting.  Flying Toastmasters also welcomed four new guests: Linda, Alan, Joyce, and Trevor.

Flying Toastmasters Welcomes New Member: A Songbird

Sept 2, 2006 -- Flying Toastmasters heartily welcomes Dorothy, the newest addition to our fleet.  Dorothy is joining us just as Aaron is leaving.  But who is she, really?  Well, for starters, Dorothy is a true songbird.  She will be singing this afternoon at the "PNE Star Discovery" semifinals from 4-5PM in the Rogers Amphitheatre.  She will greatly appreciate your support for being out there.  I can't wait for the results.

Aaron is Leaving

August 24, 2006 -- Today was Aaron's last meeting with Flying Toastmasters.  For almost two years we have seen Aaron soar into the stratosphere.  And over the past several weeks Aaron has been rushing to finish his CC designation before leaving us.  He finished just in time.  Aaron issued the following statement to say thank you and goodbye:

Dear Fellow Toastmasters

I would like to say thank you to all fellow Toastmasters, certainly including all those who attended tonight's (24 Aug 2006) meeting, for supporting me all along. I am leaving Vancouver for Hong Kong on Saturday to pursue my graduate studies in Juris Doctor (law) for couple years, and I am definitely going to miss Flying Toastmasters. Indeed, I feel that I have been a bit rushing through my projects during the past couple months, as I did not have much chance to serve the other roles in the agenda which I've always wanted to do. Nevertheless, it's in here that I discover that I can actually make a speech in front of people! I wouldn't have believed this before I've joined. I have always been trying to encourage my friends and colleagues to join Toastmasters. Anyways, I do hope we can stay in touch from time to time, for I might think of a table topic next time but I have nowhere to apply it! Again, thank you, and I hope everyone succeeds in all their endeavours and take good care.

Regards
Aaron

Congratulations Aaron on attaining your CC designation.  We will miss you.  Good show!

Leading Edge Toastmasters

July 21, 2006 -- There is no Flying Toastmasters meeting this week, but this is certainly no excuse for not Toastmastering!  Join me, Edmond the webmaster, as I visit Richmond's only advanced club: Leading Edge Toastmasters.  The meeting runs from 7:30 - 9:00 PM on July 21 at the Brighouse Park Pavilion, 7840 Granville Avenue.  Flying's next meeting is on July 27.

Ken's Inaugural Visit

July 13, 2006 -- What an eventful meeting today.  Our new Area Governor, Ken, and his wife, Margaret, made their first visit to Flying Toastmasters.  We also had our club's first outdoor meeting this year.  Ted, the meeting's chair, deserves bonus points for saving the meeting when the doors to the meeting room were locked by suggesting an outdoor meeting.  I am sure that Ken was mightily impressed with Ted's quick thinking.

Summer Programming

June 29, 2006 -- Today is the last regular meeting before Flying Toastmasters takes off into our annual summer programming.  Please come to this meeting as we will be discussing the programming for July and August.

Officer Training

June 25, 2006 -- We had a hot officer training today at the WCB.  Irene, Anne, Gladys, and Edmond were present.  It was hot for two reasons.  Firstly, we discussed lots of new ideas for improving our club, and we are very enthusiastic.  Secondly, there was no air conditioning.

Puppy Love

June 9, 2006 -- Nadia will be back next week after her short leave to take care of her new puppy.  We all look forward to seeing pictures.  Can anyone say "Awwh?"

Welcome Guests!

June 8, 2006 -- Flying Toastmasters welcomed many new guests this week: Joseph, Justin, Jacqueline, Joyce.  We were delighted see you all.  Welcome!

Region 1 Conference

June 2-3, 2006 -- Also known as "Hollywood North," this event will be held in Vancouver.  You will be entertained, educated, inspired (by world-renowned speaker Peter Legge), and awed (by the regional level of the International Speech Contest).  You can register online at region1tm.org

A Toast to Many More Firsts

June 1, 2006 -- Flying Toastmasters has much to celebrate as the Toastmasters year comes to a close at the end of this month.  Gladys has become our club's latest CTM and is now in retirement, while Aaron has just graduated from UBC.  Both have bright and exciting futures to look forward to.

We have elected new club officers for the coming year.  Irene remains our beloved club President.  Gladys and Anne swap positions with Gladys taking Education and Anne taking Membership.  Yours truly stays put with Public Relations.  Amy and Irene become our new Co-Treasurers, just as we welcome Renée as our new Sergeant at Arms.  Laileen remains as our dear Secretary.  Ted, who is no longer an official club officer, is still Flying Toastmaster's  Table Topics Master Master.  (Bring on your toughest questions Ted!)

Flying Toastmasters also has new members.  We welcome Susan, Brian, and Sabrina.  Sabrina has also just been Table Topics Master for the first time, and she did it with spunk.  Everyone wishes to welcome our guests to Flying Toastmasters: Jonathan, Jon, Jenny, and Sophia.  We hope you all enjoyed yourselves immensely and wish you visit our club again.

Our meeting on June 1 also saw Lisa take on the role of Grammarian and Aaron take on the role of Chair for their first times.  Susan also gave her first speech.   A toast to many more firsts.

Gladys is Now a CTM

May 26, 2006 -- A well-deserved congratulations goes to Gladys.  On May 26, 2006, she officially became Flying Toastmaster's latest CTM.  The Competent Toastmaster Award (CTM) is the first level in Toastmasters International's education program.  Her achievement coincides neatly with her recently announced retirement from the medical profession.  Gladys will no doubt spend every moment of her newfound freedom celebrating her new CTM.

Talk Up Toastmasters Award

May 19, 2006 -- I've just received word from The Link Newsletter (available online at toastmasters.bc.ca) that our club has won the Talk Up Toastmasters Award!  We had 5 new members join before March 31, 2006.  Congratulations everyone, and a special welcome to our newest members.  Let's keep welcoming new members and make it to the big 20 member mark!

Aaron is Graduating

May 11, 2006 -- We have some exciting news for everyone.  Our very own Aaron is graduating from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science.  His specialization is biochemistry.  "I just got word last week that I had passed my last final exam," gushed Aaron.  I am sure he is very relieved.  Congratulations Aaron, from all of us here at Flying Toastmasters!

District 21 Spring Conference in Prince George

May 5-7, 2006 -- You do not need to be a speaker to attend!  It has recently come to my attention that there is a misconception about speech contests and conferences.  Toastmasters allows non-speakers and even non-Toastmasters to attend events as guests to be a part of the audience.  Toastmasters does not turn people away and is in the habit of welcoming one and all, strangers and neighbours.

That being said, those who will be attending the District 21 Spring Conference will be in for a real treat.  The keynote speaker is J.A. Gamache.  His speech, "Verbum Vitam!" (The spoken word brings life!), will be about the lessons learned from being twice a finalist at the World Championship of public speaking.  You will learn how he worked the topics of his winning speeches.  In his unique way, he reveals the struggles, the victories and the struggles turned into victories that he encountered on this way to the international finals.

Spring Has Sprung

May 1, 2006 -- And we have the pictures to prove it: SpringPhotos2006

Beat the Clock

May 1 - June 30, 2006 -- Finish the Year With a Bang!  Clubs adding five new, dual or reinstated members during these two months receive a Beat the Clock ribbon to display on the club's banner.  The club will also earn a choice of one module from The Better Speaker Series,  The Successful Club Series or The Leadership Excellence Series.

Five Out of Ten Goals Met

April, 2006 -- Congratulations everyone.  Flying Toastmasters is now a Distinguished Club!  Let's try to get two more goals and become Select Distinguished.  We need more ATMs and CLs before June 30.  We are flying high!

Toastmasters Week in British Columbia

February 5-11, 2006 -- Toastmasters clubs all across British Columbia will be holding open houses, special meetings, and speech marathons this week.  What's in store at Flying Toastmasters?  You'll have to come to our meeting this week to find out!  Also, a special welcome goes to our latest members: Tim, Juan, and Aaron.

Makeover Madness

January 3, 2006 -- First message this year!  The website has a new, simplified look.  That long awaited airplane is finally in our banner.  Don't forget, our next meeting is this Thursday, January 5 and the theme is "New Years' Resolutions."  Laileen has already announced her resolution not to make new years' resolutions.  On January 12, the theme is "Birthdays."  Happy Birthday to all January members and congratulations to Anne for reaching the CTM level!
