Fifteen Years of Dogdom
This book is dedicated to Blue, Daphne, and Hazel; the three dogs that have really, truly affected my life. And to Jasper, for being such a big sweet heart!
I would also like to dedicate this book to all the people at Sit Stay (www.sitstay.com), who have helped put up with my millions of questions and arguments. Thanks guys! Hugs to your furry friends!
Shara Slorstad, age Fifteen (born July 10, 1987) was born in Prince George, BC.
Shara grew up around dogs, ever since she was born there was always a dog in the house.
At age Five, her interest in dogs became stronger then ever.
As soon as she could read, she was reading books about dogs. As soon as she could write, she was writing stories about dogs too.
Throughout her Fifteen years with animals, she has had five dogs, six cats, three gerbils, one mouse, a snake, a squirrel, two robins, a sparrow, and too many fish to count.
Shara and her two sisters (Ana age 20, and Kat age 16) had spent most of there time tending to hurt, or abandoned animals (wild, or tame).
Sharas passion for dogs started to grow into almost an obsession (but a healthy one) once she got her first dogs (not family dog), Daphne. Daphne was given to Shara for her Seventh Birthday.
Her plans for the future is to become a Professional Dog Trainer and/or a Dog Behaviorist, as well as to become an author. She plans to write teen novels, and books on dogs, such as her training methods.
With Fifteen years of being around dogs, and ten of them that she can remember, this book starts out on year Five.
I hope you enjoy this lovely tale about friendship, and the behavior and mind of the dog that Shara would like to share with you
About the Author
I am NOT a professional in any way when it comes to dogs! All the information given in this book is from experience, and common knowledge.
This book covers ten of my Fifteen years with dogs, because I can only remember the age of five. This book is titled Fifteen Years Of Dogdome only because I have been around dogs since I was born.
This book is not a training guide; it is simply what I have learned about dogs. It covers from my experience with the dogs I have had, and dogs I have been around.
It is written for the sake of sharing my experience with others, and to get the message out that no mater what age you are, you can accomplish anything you desire.
Introduction
Years Five and Six
When I was young, my family owned a Newfoundland Dog. We had her since she was a pup; I do not remember her much. I was too young, but judging by the stories Ive heard, I feel like I knew her. When she was at the Terrible Twos she would always chew up my Dads gardening hoses. My Mom had told me about one day, when she was standing in the kitchen and she heard my Dad hollering at the dog.
She ran out side and yelled Dale! What are you doing to my dog? In addition, of coarse, Bell knew that my mom would save her. She would run and hide behind her, as if she knew my Mom would protect her from my Dad.
This example of behavior, I found quite interesting. The bond between a dog and his/her owner is one of the strongest bonds one can find. Much like the bond between a mother and her children.
It is something amazing, the love and care for one another that can be shared between two different species.
For example, my Cat now, Daiquiri, and my Dog Hazel. When Dak (short for Daiquiri) was a kitten, she would curl up between Hazels paws and sleep. This type of bond, I found extremely interesting. Everyone has heard the old saying Fighting like Cats and Dogs, but what I had witnessed was a complete argument towards that statement.
When I was Six, I watched a Television program about the German Shepherd Dog. Once I watched this I though I want a dog like that. I begged my parents for the longest time to get one of these dogs. I found it completely amazing how smart they were. These dogs were used in Tracking, Police Work, Herding, Agility, and much more! I found it completely fascinating how intelligent the dog mind was.
Although my Mom had saved our Labrador Retriever from the ASPCA (it was his last day before he would be put to sleep), I still wanted one of those Shepherd dogs.
It took me some while to realize that I already had a dog as smart as those dogs.
