If you percieve someone as an authority on a subject, then you will accept what they say in the area of their authority as the truth. Those who have proven their authority in an area deserve our attention an obedience. However, many claim authority who have not proven themselves, yet we often give them the same respect and obedience as those who have really proven their authority.

If you really are an authority in an area, then you should not hide it. If you are not an authority in an area you wish to be, then become one.

The pattern:

1. Claim authority in an area that you wish to manipulate someone. Use Liking to become a default authority on any subject.

2. Prove your authority in some way. Combin
e this part of the pattern with Social Proof to amplify the power of both patterns.

3. Once your target thinks you are an authority, you can manipulate in any way you want in the area you've claimed authority.

You do not need to be an authority on any specific subject. Often, with the use of your image and social proof, you can become an authority on life itself like many cults. Once this occurs, you can manipulate people at will.

The classic example of this pattern is the doctor. Doctors are considered authorities in their field, and when we look for advice in health, we go to them. Many people throughout the years have been found to be lying about being a doctor, yet they are believed by many people who accept medical advice from them. All that separates a doctor from anyone else is a degree in medicine, but this simple paper can be faked, and people have often done so.
