The fish plant, and Ramea's attractions...

The community has a number of attractions that make the island the beautiful place that it is, as you will see in the below pictures. But one of the more obvious attractions in Ramea is the fish plant, which in many ways is both state of the art, and passed its time.

The Ramea fish plant is a completely self contained production facility containing a large wharf/receiving complex, a large office and warehousing building and extensive cold storage facilities in addition to the main processing area.

The receiving facility is modern and designed to accommodate large deep sea trawlers. It is equipped to handle both box and vacuum-type discharge of cargo. The wharf has two berths with depths of 4-7 meters alongside; the west berth is 54 meters long and the inside berth is 70 meters long. It contains an unloading unit approximately 32 meters long and 4.5 meters wide.

The plant has a portable freshwater supply with an estimated capacity of 200 G.P.M. A second system can deliver approximately 1,500 - 2,000 G.P.M. of clean chlorinated sea water to production areas.

The refrigeration system has a freezing capacity of approximately 300 tons, with seven plate freezers and one automatic plate freezer. It contains three ice machines with a total ice making capacity of 80 tons of ice per 24 hours and a complete ice storage system. There are two cold storage buildings. One, with an area of approximately 370 square meters is attached to the main building. The second building is detached and has a main storage area of approximately 260 square meters.

The main production space has an area of approximately 2,330 square meters. The plant and the work force is well equipped to process a variety of species, but particularly red fish or perch. The plant has an excellent track record in both hand and machine filleting. A success season in machine filleting cod was completed in 1992. A major $300,000 upgrading to the cutting line equipment was completed in 1987. This includes a customized automatic retail freezing system for the processing of perch and a new chill room. Also included were self contained cold storage units which combine low operation costs with the capability of handling high product volumes. The plant also contains modern technology for monitoring and producing high quality product.

The plant has a steam heating system and a complete sprinkler system throughout the complex, which is currently being upgraded. Adjacent to the main facility is a meal plant approximately 385 square meters in area. A 150 square meter meal storage shed is also contained on the complex. The main office and general store has a floor area of approximately 655 square meters. The warehouse attached to it has a storage space of 150 square meters. The maintenance building is 250 square meters in area.

The fish plant is just one of the many attractions that Ramea has to offer. Just the beautiful scenery is enough to make anyone want to come here.

Man O War hill is the highest point on Ramea island. From a top this hill you will get a breath taking view of Ramea, and all of its surrounding islands. They say that on a nice day you can see clear all the way to the St. Pierre & Miquelin islands. The walking trail that covers the entire distance of the "back of the island" is a ideal trail for leisure walking, or running. The trail has a number of signs along it's 1 mile track that points out to things on the island, and there are benchs every so far to just sit and enjoy the sites. The surrounding islands themselves are something to want to see. All a make ideal camping areas, and a good place to go off and just spend the day.
