Summer 2002
It's  a go! The Flexer-Harrison family is moving south of the border  to Northern California.  A BIG move after 14 years in Quebec...A fond farewell to all of you who made us so welcome in Shawinigan...
We are moving to
Benicia, a small town  on the sea 22 miles north of Berkeley..it means NO MORE SNOW, a  mediterranean climate where irrigation is the watchword in the summer.  Stephen will be working for EDA and Limtech, and Riva will be translating  and being a mother (as usual).
New

Stephen's father had a heart attack at the beginning of the month, so Stephen flew over on short notice to be with his parents.  His father is doing much better now, and has been  fitted with a pacemaker.  In the next couple of months he will be able to resume his busy schedule of community care volunteer activities -  he's in great demand as a driver!

January 2002
While Madeleine was running all weekend and Aaron was playing soccer and bowling, Stephen and I  were skiing in Banff, at Sunshine, and visiting old friends in Calgary, and family in Fort McMurray.  It was wonderful to finally see Suzanne and Alistair and really meet their children Toby and Meredith, not to mention the dogs and cats (especially our old cat Abico, who is now 13 years old!).  We   also dropped in on Danielle Cloutier, AKA Le Chocolatier,  in Canmore, and spent a night at Carolyn Pim's new house. Calgary was wonderfully dynamic, the MEC had a great selection of clothes and the mountains called...skiing at Sunshine was good (for us Easterners), the hot tub at the Inns of Banff was everything it was supposed to be and Riva got a chance to visit   Will and Gaylene  up in Fort McMurray!  It was fascinating to see the oil sands, and she even  had a tour of the area on very short notice courtesy of Will's neighbour Fraser MacDonald (Thanks so much!).  Fort Smith is only 503 km north...!
Madeleine ran in her first indoor track meets for 2002 on Saturday, January 19 in Quebec City  at Laval University    and  on Sunday, January 20 in Sherbrooke.
It was a very busy weekend for her!

Congratulations to Madeleine! Her perseverance awards are certainly merited.  She wanted contact lenses, and since she is starting high school in September, we went to the optometrist to see what was involved.  Seems that you can try the soft lenses for a week, so that is what she is doing.  And try is the operative word - she comes home after school to practice putting them on and taking them off.
