June 23-25, 2001 The Benjamin Girls of the Mauricie team won the first banner of the team's history at the Schools Provincial Track and Field meet in Sherbrooke, Quebec. On a hot hot Monday afternoon, Madeleine and her teammates won second place in the 4x100m relay, and coupled with the other 26 medals, it was enough to beat the Richelieu contingent and take home the banner. Madeleine also competed in the 80m sprint, in the second heat, and came 5th, with a time of 11.69 sec., an improvement on her earlier attempt of 11.91 sec. She ranks 13th in the province this season in her category, and she is 3rd in her age group - that is just the beginning! All in all, she had a wonderful time away from home for three days without Mum and Dad.
June 5, 2001 HURRAY! Madeleine has made the Provincial Shortlist and will be competing in the Quebec School Provincial Track and Field meet to be held (tentatively) June 23-25, 2001 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. She will be running in the 80m 12-13 year old category. We wish her all the luck!
May 27-29, 2001 Madeleine has won all the sprint events at her school's annual track and field meet, so we have decided to get her into the Mauricie school regional meet. She came home with the silver medal in the 80m 12-13 yr girls, and she is only 11! It was the first time she had ever run such a race, and she did it with the able assistance of her father Stephen, a former English Schools and Northern champion. I think that we will hear much more about Madeleine on the track in years to come. It's the first time she has ever won a medal, and certainly not the last! But she ran against provincial-level sprinters and she acquitted herself most satisfactorily. Perhaps the most triumphant moment was the 4x100m relay 12-13 yr. girls, where her team came first, and she ran the first leg, making the first baton exchange. Although her team was ultimately disqualified (because she does not attend Seminaire Ste-Marie, but is a student at Shawinigan High School) it came first by a long distance. We are hoping that she is eligible for the Provincial meet to be held in Sherbrooke, on June 23-25 2001. We find out on Tuesday, June 5 2001.
