GEOGRAPHICAL AREA

The total area of the peninsula amounts to 221.607 km2, similar in size to the United Kingdom, New Zealand or Romania. South Korea is comprized of 99.237 km2 or 45% of the total territory, while North Korea has 122.370 km2, the remaining 55%.

About 70% of the territory is mountainous, mainly in the North and East. Along the Southern and Western coast, the montains gradually give way to vast plains. The majority of the rivers have their springs in the Northern and Eastern quadrants and flow to the Yellow and South Seas. Mainly concentrated on the South shore, there are up to 3.000 island of various sizes, which offer a scenary unmatched in the whole world. Also essencial, the major natural resources of the country are minerals, tungstein, charcoal and sand.
