This band initially consisted of Rich Rust and Dan Rembert.  Originally called Blue Revolution, it was named for the dark, melancholy themes of the songs the duo were playing at the time.  At this point the two-some had been playing together for over 10-years, so Rich suggested that a fresh approach should be added to the band to break the doldrums in the music and the creativity.  This bright spot appeared in the form of Matt Rust, Richs younger brother by almost a decade, and instantly improved the artistic atmosphere.  Once the new member was added, the band took shape.  After Matt joined his brother and his cousin in this well-rounded trio, they adopted the name Sphere after the Michael Critchon parapsychotic-science fiction novel of the same name.  This became a concept that the trio used as inspiration in many of the songs in their repertoire.  They wrote and produced songs with just one goal in mind, to record and enjoy the music.  Rich was busy with many of Pittsburghs most popular bands like the Nixon Clocks, the Affordable Floors, and the Dharma Sons, so he formed this side project as a purely creative output for his and his partners talents.

The effort started in the attic of Dans Pittsburgh house, which quickly turned into a recording studio and transformed the guys into recording artists again.  With a common theme, the songs traversed the listeners on journeys of time and space.  Their debut and only album,
Tombe du Ciel, included such songs as This Time and Always with the Weather.  This project soon became an conduit for their creative song-writing and recording.  They mastered the art of record making.  Sphere not only helped the three-some refine the production side of music, they also perfected the musicianship.  As they progressed from instrument to instrument on song after song, they noticed they enjoyed the freedom of no rules music.  This simply meant that the group of sounds were greater then its parts.  Once Sphere recorded the sounds, they engineered it into music.  Each song crafted in its own way.  Some were traditional and some unorthodox, but all resonated real.

By December 1998, the performance-bug bit the members and the next stage was becoming obvious to each of them.  The Sphere project conceived the annual
Rockin Christmas Eve Concert.  This new purpose pushed the guys to the stage once again.  At that point, Rich, Dan, and Matt welcomed the role of stage performers to showcase their talents and provided an outlet for other performers.  For the new outlook, Sphere transformed into Echo 11 and took their act on the road.
