Although it is attractive in its flowering stage, Reed Canary Grass is not desirable in prairies. Many strains of Reed Canary are not native, but are of European origin. Reed Canary is a cool season grass which spreads by a robust system of rhizomes, forming dense patches which allow few other plants an opportunity to grow. Since it is a cool season grass it greens up earlier than many prairie plants.
