Common Mullein

Verbascum thapsus

The Common Mullein is a European plant from the snapdragon family that often appears in disturbed sites such as prairie restorations. It is bi-ennial and produces a rosette the first year and the tall flowering stalk the second. In our experience, as a prairie planting establishes itself, there are usually only isolated mullein individuals to be seen. Exotic or not, I've found no reason so far to dislike seeing a few of these in a prairie planting. When the plants have dried up, the stalks remain standing and birds pick the seeds from the seed heads.
